I'm reading the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell at the moment. He's talking about what makes people successful, and discussing how much practice, psychologists consider, is required to become world class at something.

Apparently scientific consensus is that you have to put in 10,000 hours of practice to become world class. Which for most high fliers equates to 10 years.

I remember Fast explaining his view that to become excellent at pool might take a player 10 years - or 5 years if he dedicates pretty much all his time to it.

This seems to fit with the 10,000 hours maths (say 6 hours practice a day for 5 years), so science supports Fast's conclusion. Well done!

Apparently there are no shortcuts to this, which is a shame

I will continue to report on interesting findings as and when.

(P.S. - Even though Mozart was known as a child genius, his early compositions were probably written down by his dad and were largely made up of bits and pieces of other peoples' works. Apparently they weren't anything special either. His first accepted 'masterpiece' was composed when he was 21. So what we're saying is he was basically crap. )

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((***)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

FL SAY: I am a PHD, I am science, what have I ever written, that was not true.
Excellent Grasshopper, when you do the math, accept these facts, it's pretty depressing. Confucius say, yo, if you rip off annuder chinks work, be smart, change it around so they dont catch on and youse dont end up in court.

fL SAY, there is really very little new knowledge, all we do, is rip off, what came before us, and relabel it with our new label.

fl say, if youse cant buy a thrill, then just rip some poor fooker off and try to resell his shit. And just go back, jack, and keep doin it again.

Seven decades of acquiring knowledge, and when, finally, I literally acquired it all, all there was, in pool, I realized, nobody gave a flying fuck......................

It was all wasted days, wasted nights. Nobody fuckin cares, and when they find out, you have it all, all they do is degrade and try to destroy you, because they are jealous, of what you have, and what they cant ever posses.

At now, I am at the point, where all i now know, is nuttin. So I have, gone full circle.

Larry you know that's not true for your fans on this board. And for somebody who doesn't give a fook, your output is amazing.

If I have to practice 10,000 I am SOL, too old at this point. I find that if I play once a week and practice once a week I can barely maintain my game, if I play once a week and practice twice I can improve.

You have to at least, play 3 or 4 times a week, or you lose the feel of the cue.
