I know there's no such thing a a stupid question, but I'm here to test that theory. Right now, when I break, I put the CB on the left and put a little top on it. I maybe sink a ball about half the time this way, but sometimes, the break is lousy. I've watched others and everyone does it different. I'm not looking to be a pro - just a little more consistent. Any pointers?

Bustergal,

Welcome to the best billiard forum available!

There really is no such thing as a stupid question on this forum. There are many varying opinions here as to what the optimum break area, etc. would be on a table. For starters, you must remember that every table will play differently even if it's in the same house (pool hall) as well as the table you play on will also differ on a daily basis with regards to temperature, humidity, etc. Don't be shy...ask away.

Please keep in mind that the following is just my opinion. Some will agree, some will disagree.

You don't mention how far to the left you place the CB but I recommend that you start in the middle of the headstring, break a rack and see how the CB ends up. Re-rack and adjust either right or left and break again and check the CB results. Continue to do this over and over until you find the optimum break for you. One thing that I will mention is that any english you use on the CB will have the reverse effect on the OB meaning that if you apply top to the CB, the resulting english applied to the OB will be bottom, left on the CB will be right on OB, right on CB will be left on OB, draw/bottom on the CB will be top on the OB. So, if you tend to use a little top when breaking a rack, you are imparting bottom to the point of impact on the rack and the transfer of energy from the CB will cause a stall on the ball(s) that you are impacting before they start rolling end over end.

As for me personally, I typically will use center, bottom, bottom left, bottom right.
Yet, despite the look on my face, you are still talking.

Sarcasm. Just one of my many talents.

best luck and welcome to the best site ever!!!

I beg to differ my friend...

If it were possible to take all the worms in the world and mash them together into one giant worm (with the same proportions as a normal earthworm), how big would the resulting worm be, and could it live in Russia?

Re: Breaks

IMO, if you want a respectable amateur break, you should try a few different techniques, giving each one sufficient time to get to know (eg a couple of weeks) and settle on one that seems to work for you.

I don't know the ins and outs of what you do now, but one idea to experiment with is taking a little bit of your power and focussing on getting a very pure dead-centre hit on the head ball (so ideally the cb comes back towards your cue (without requiring draw)). I do this straigth down the middle (or just off straight to avoid running the CB over a sticker on the spot, if there is one) and find I get a better spread (and a louder contact) than a less precise shot, but seem to pocket fewer balls.

Fast has written some very good stuff about the break too. I recommend taking a look.

Another suggestion is to get a billiard or pool book I recommend the pro book or the advanced pro book it tells you what arw some good break positions how to rack for an easy run out in nine ball our how to rack for a harder run out good book also has game stragies for all parts of the game explains some safeties and i found it very useful

Most real players try to hit the break "SQUARE" , which means solid , or centered to where the cue ball comes straight back on the line you shot . It's not about how hard you hit , it's about how good you hit , or precise . This technique puts all the power into the rack . If your cue ball goes to a side rail on the break , YOU MISSED . Different strokes for different folks ... I stroke the bottom of the cue ball and when I pull the trigger I'm lowering my butt to slightly to raise the tip to the center of the cue ball , focusing on the 1 ball , really shooting through and following through towards the rack . i like to stay down instead of jumping up . Like I said , it's not how hard you hit , it's how good you hit !!! Try moving the cue ball from side to side to get a feel , and see how the balls react . Sometimes you want to position your rock on the break instead of just whackin' it , and turning it loose . It's all in your head , so relax and focus . Stay down on all your shots , makes you deadly and scary to your competition .
Life is short , so play hard . If you don't shoot the balls in , you don't get paid . It's not the amount , it's the principal .
