You get up in the morning, put on your jeans, boots, big belt buckle belt, western shirt, put on your cowboy hat and go to work. You are on a ranch, or a farm with a herd of cattle you are working with every day. Or you grew up in that environment. You are a cattleman. A rancher, a western rural person. You own and ride a horse.

You can watch the 1963 movie, Hud and see what real cowboys were like back then in Texas, frankly, they have not changed much since then. They don't much care about what the latest fad is in NYC or LA and you wont see too many of them with bolts in their tongues and rings in their ears.

I thought the movie was kinda dumb, with a real lousy ending. They had put newman 2 years earlier in a pool movie playing a pos punk, and now he's in the same role, just wearing a cowboy hat. James Dean, and Brando had success playing punks and rebels, and so I guess that was what they were doing with Neuman at the time.
I thought the dad was how a cowboy should be, and I though Hud, was a pos punk drunk, trying to screw the help. If he had tried to take my ranch away and declare me incompentent, I would have kicked him off the spread and dis inherited the som bitch, and told him, when he grew up, and learned how to take orders, he could then come back. And if he could not find a job, I would have told him to join the Marine corps, they would make a man out of him.
