GOLF HELPS ME TEACH POOL
I GET SO MANY SOLID TEACHING TIPS OUT OF GOLF MAGAZINE.
It says, an instructor should see how much he can leave alone, not how much he can change. He will get better results helping the student to play inside his own game with what he already has.
So many pros are winning and then begin to follow the latest fad or swing tip. They begin to try this and that, copy what the newest hottest guy out is doing and soon, they lose their way and their swing. What they had that was working is no more. If it aint broke, don’t go fixing it.
Sandy Lyle, Seve Ballesteros, Curtis Strange, Johnnie Miller, David Duvall all were on top and tried to change to something new and different and their games tanked and they went from #1 to #200 overnight. They all followed the siren song of the secret to the perfect swing and sought it out. The only secret is there is no secret. Keep your swing 95% you, and 5% instruction. Not the other way around.
This has taught me to teach natural pool, where I help students find ways to stand and hold the cue that seem natural to their bodies.
We all need a coach and even with one, over time, we move this, change that and our once great swing changes little by little and one day, it is badly out of tune. The #2 player in the world, Phil Michelson used to putt great and then it slowly left him. He went to a new putting coach, Stockton and in two days he was back on track. He said, he helped him to return to doing, what he once did.
The lesson is play with what feels right, go with what you know and what you feel.
When you plant over the pool shot, make about 3 fast strokes to loosen up and establish your light feel of the cue, then 3 slower strokes to get the feel of the power to use to put the cue ball where you want it to go to. Like the waggle in golf. Then go into a pause for a few seconds, where you make the final alignment and sight, then you pull back and go into the shot in one movement, just like golf.
