Have passport, will travel
I have filled two up totally, going to over 70 countries will do it. I think this is my 5th one I just got in and I am good to run around the planet until 2019. They expire every 10 years and you have to get a new one. The new ones have chips embedded and I bet they can then track where ever you go. It used to be you did not need one for Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean, now you can't go anywhere with out one.
The price also went up to $100. Mine came into me in 4 weeks, most this time of year take 4-6. Just don't apply during the summer vacation months and expect to get anything fast back.

Should have your NEW one in 14-18 days....

No, I got it already, only took 4 weeks, that was fast. They told me, this time of year, 4-6 weeks.
During the summer vacation season, it can get real slow. A criminal druggie drunk who lives close to me, tried to get out of the country fast last summer and even bought the expedited service and a outside company to ram it through. He was trying to get to Acapulco. It took about 2 months.
He got down there, and the Mexicans stole him blind. He loaded up on the cheap drugs. They broke into his apt and stole everything he had, and his stash, cameras, his clothes, they waited for him to replace it all, then came back, and did it again. They stole his doberman he took down with him, then his car. Finally he gave up and limped back home. The only thing he had with him, was one hell of a tan.
They probably said, amigo, this is not a gringo, this is Santa Clause, who comes early.
One guy wrote about driving his pickup truck across the border and while at a light, car in front and behind him had him blocked in, the guy walks up, shoves a .45 in his face, and said, get out gringo, or you die and I shoot you through the window. Leave your billfold on the dash. He did, the light changed, and off went his truck never to be seen again. He is now on foot in Mexico, without a penny.
For decades I bought Mexican insurance and drove my car over the border, it was no big deal and I never had a problem. At night if I was going to some Catina and some were cat houses on the side or in the back, I would take a cab. I would fly deeper down in and rent cars and drive around. During the day was fine, I just never liked to be out driving there at night. I have been all over that country.
I went to Dego a lot, and it was neat, you took the trolley or bus down to the border, and walked across, then a cab over to the hi li palace to gamble and drink, and branched out from there. It was really safe, but today, many are afraid of being kidnapped and ransomed back. Your family gets a call, send us 10K, or we FedEx his hand to you. Evil and great wickedness is upon the land there now.
I loved going down to TJ, then driving on down to Ensenada, and there, the real Mexico began. Catch a bull fight, a Mariachi Band, go to a titty bar, and they are much more naughtier than they are here in the US. Get drunk on good tequila.
I would not let my kids go down there now on spring break. Go back to Fort Lauderdale where its safe.

Now it has become a very dangerous place, especially along the border, with all the drugs moving in and they are taking this over from the Colombians. Their country is becoming a war zone, just like Columbia was.

Do the new passports have a tracking device, or is it just a simple ID chip?
Knowing where they are going with this stuff, If I had to bet, I would go with the tracking. Most do not think so. Everyone in Europe has a passport, and 70% do in Australia. We in the US have the lowest ratio, about 20% own a passport. It seems that only the rich travel outside the us on vacation. The rest is lucky to make it to Disney world.
