Fast Larry’s rules. Play 8 ball but you can’t shoot and pot the 8 ball until you first pot in your designated side pocket the one or fifteen ball first, then you can pot black 8 and win.
Lag for the break which is very important in this game. Rack any ball on top, 8 in the middle and the 1 and 15 on the two bottom corners. Looking at the rack behind the line, if you put the one on the right bottom corner then the one must pot in the right side and the 15 on the left side bottom corner which must pot in the left side. It is best to mark the two side pockets with a dime sized sticker and writing on each one 1 or 15 so no confusion occurs later in the game. From behind the rack the one would always pot in the right side, the 15 in the left side on every game.
You can learn to break soft where you can move either the 1 or 15 up close to your side and not move the other ball up well. You can bring them both up mid table. You want to learn to have a controlled soft break. The winner of the lag breaks and if he makes a solid and stripe he now may choose the 1 or 15. If he makes a solid he must shoot the one in the right side and play solids. If he makes a stripe he then must shoot the 15 in the left side playing all stripes. If he makes the one in any of 5 pockets on the break other than designated side pocket it must go in it spots and his run continues. If he makes the opponents 15 in one of the other 5 pockets it spots up.
On the break if you make any ball you can begin your run. If you make 4 and one solid and 3 stripes and choose the 1 or solid you may now shoot at a solid and the stripes stay down. Make the 8 on the break and that is normaly a win of the game. Here we spot it up and your run continues because you did not make the 1 or 15 before the 8. If you pot the 8 prior to making your side ball loss of game. All shots must be called, no slop. The only way to win on the break is to make the 1 or 15 in its proper designated side and the 8 ball as well after. It does not matter which one goes in first. On the break if the one pots first and then the 8, that is a win of the game. Neither has to be called. I have done this a couple of times but you will find this to be quite rare.
I do not attempt to cover every rule situation here and for those that come up use your current rule book you play 8 ball on.
The 8 ball is open and can be used for combination's or caroms. If you are solids you may pot the one in any 5 pockets and it spots and your run continues. You may use it for positional purposes. You may pot the one in the bottom corner to play your cue ball under the spot to then set up a cut shot in the side. Any time you pot the 1 or 15 in the wrong pocket it spots up and your run continues.
When your opponent gets his 1 or 15 in a duck position you want to drive it out and up or down table. You can not shoot your cue ball directly into his ball. If you do it is a foul and he gets cue ball in hand with the ball replaced where it was. You may however hit your ball and shoot it into his, or hit your ball and carom the cue ball into it legally.
You will find that mastering the ability to softly lag your 1 or 15 off of an up table long back to park it by the side a tremendous winning tool to posses. Also soft cross banking to park a duck if you miss. Being able to softly shoot very hard and thin cuts to park at the pocket or go in is all you need to win. The more experienced player beats the ball banger or shot maker every time. Old people should only play young people this game which drives them nuts. Experience and old age treachery will defeat youth every time at this game. With just a couple of weeks of playing and practicing this game you will then have a large advantage over your opponents?
When you begin your run every pot should be calculated to put you into a position to pot or advance your 1 or 15 ball towards your side pocket. You always shoot that ball softly in case you miss you leaves it as a hanger.
