Playing Above the Competition


They key to victory is to always play above the level of competition.
So exactly how do you consistently play above the competition?
To play consistently, it is part attitude and part team chemistry. I am sure that most athletes have had experienced the common problem of playing an opponent that you are suppose to or are expected to beat. Let's face it, it is easy to get up for the big games when you are playing a tough opponent... the motivation is high to beat a rival or come away with an upset. So playing to the level of your opponent in this case is positive and helpful.
The problem is when you play down to the level of an opponent who is not as strong as you are or your team is. This is when your team gets upset by a team they should have beat. What can you do to stay on top of your game when you are playing a weaker opponent?
It is all in your attitude
First, never take winning for granted. If you are too confident or overconfident that you or your team will win the game, this can backfire. This attitude leads to lackluster preparation and a sloppy game plan. You need to prepare for each and every game or match like you would if it was a championship.
Get pumped up!
Second, get excited about playing the other team. The lack of motivation is usually caused by a lack of excitement or overconfidence. You have to find a way to get pumped about playing your opponent, who you think will be easy to beat. Set a goal for yourself to have a career scoring day for yourself or the team, for example. You have to challenge yourself beyond winning the game.
It is all about TEAM!
Third, the team chemistry has to be there for the team to work together and perform well. If some of the members of the team don't care about playing the "easy" game that will disrupt the team cohesion and unity. The members of the team have to unite and get focused for a game in which anything could happen. Create team goals that will help you win and win big like you expect to.
Focus in on your job
Fourth, focus is an important element in peak performance. If you or the team is not focused on execution and the game plan, then you might as well not show up for the game. The coach has to do a good job or laying out what you should focus on in the game. Then it is your job to stick to the task-relevant cues that he or she set forth. During the game, if you find your mind wandering during play, recognize this and get refocused on execution.
You are in total control
Don't let the level of your opponent change your motivation, preparation, or focus to play your best. No one can coast through the game and expect to win. Get excited to play, focus on the game plan, and challenge you to have a great game!
Never waste your time, unless it’s a sure bet for money or beers, playing with lesser players, only book games with players better than you. Study why you lose, how they beat you, and then find what it takes to rise to their level.
Study the people you now play against. Understand what level it takes for you to win. In most rooms if you get out from the 5 ball in 9 ball every time, you win. That is all you should then be practicing, tossing out 5 balls, running 5 and out, every time. Only lay out the 5 through the 9.
In some rooms it may be the 4 and out, another the 6 and out, it will vary.

That's true, if you are going to be a real winner, in your mind, you are a killer, with no mercy. No question about this one, you must be quite agressive. In pool, it is war, kill or be killed.

Not just in pool, but in life as well. Not actually kill vs. be killed, but it is a lookin' out for #1 society we live in.

No doubt, it is war.


However, absolutely crushing the opposition is not always the goal, in my opinion.

I think that it's necessary to instill fear, which is different from crushing the opposition.

Fear is more potent than just winning.

The goal shoud be to get your potential opponent to dread playing you.... Whatever it takes.......

Getting excited for the game sounds like good advice. It's so true sometimes you just don't bring your best.
