JUMP SHOT IN POOL & BILLIARDS HOW TO PERFORM IT

You first need to acquire the right tools for the job. One cue will not handle all the shots you will face. You will actually need 3 cues, but could get by with one, but I prefer two.
Here is now they work. The lighter and the shorter the faster the ball comes up, the higher it comes up, but it flies a short distance, stops faster with little forward roll. My Popper cue weighs 4 oz, 41” long and its thin, a specialized cue only used for very close up jumping. I only use it to clear a full ball, which is a full ball away, or a half ball away. It jumps these with no problem.

Your standard wood jump cue is going to be about 40.5” long, 2 pieces and about 8.5 oz with a plastic hard tip. It will jump full ball about 2 balls away.
Next is the Stealth jump cue, which comes in 3 pieces. In 3 pieces, it allows you to jump low and long, over a half ball at some distance the other ones do not offer you. In 2 pieces you are 6.5 ozs with a plastic tip and you can go over a full ball 2 balls away, and if your good, at about 1.5 balls away.

Some of you use the 3 piece jump break cues. I do not like or recommend them. I don’t think having a cue in 3 pieces helps it be a strong break cue. I prefer a dedicated 2 piece break cue. When you take the butt off and it becomes a jump cue, it’s now too heavy, around 9 oz on most of them and about the best you are going to get is clearing a full ball at 3 balls away. So you are buying a less effect jump cue with this type of set up. It is an idea from the early 90’s that has been long since improved on by using the shorter lighter jump cue and having a dedicated break cue instead of trying to have one cue do it all.

A new member on www.poolchat.net asked me? How do you hit a jump shot? When I do it my son says it is illegal because I am scooping it by shooting under it and he said you have to shoot down. He is probably right since that is how you damage the cloth. I have not tried that.

FL: Yes he is correct. That is a foul. You could get tossed out of a lot of rooms doing this on sight and asked not to come back. The big sins are, sitting on the rail with your feet in the air, sitting a drink or cig on the rail or playing on your nerve. These are some of the giant no no’s. A lot of teenagers discover they can jump the ball easily that way and it becomes their new toy. For some reason unknown to me this seems to be more of an Asian thing with kids. When the owner goes in the back there are usually 4 of them at the table and they will all just start scooping and jumping balls all over the table having a ball doing it. The problem is this is very easy to put little digs into the cloth and these small holes will widen up later on. If it cost you $300 to replace a cloth you would not be too happy with some ding dong ball bangers tearing up your equipment would you. You put the tip very low, almost on the cloth and make a long level follow thought and up whitey goes into the wild blue yonder.

I am against the draw teachings which are dead wrong that Byrne saddled you all with. Low and level with a long follow through. That is how you jump the CB off the table. You don’t even have to be real low to do that. I can jump the CB off the table hitting one tip below center which is quite high. It’s the level hit and long follow through that drives the cue ball up into the air.

My jack up draw method where I hit down on the CB, with a very short follow through impacting into the cloth with my tip never drives the CB into the crowd unless you don’t chalk up and miss cue.

Most rule books say to legally jump a CB you must hit it above the center. That rule is to prevent the scooping shot. The CB can be jumped by hitting it in many different positions to create different launch heights and distances it flies down table. Hitting up high launches it quicker getting it up over an OB very close to you and it will come down short and fast. Hitting it very low brings it up slower and it flies in the air longer.

I hit almost all of my jump shots very low, well below center as a draw. I set up with my tip on the top of the ball and then hit low so fast you can’t see it so you can’t call the foul on me. As long as you are jacked up hitting down and not scooping nobody is going to call a foul. The truth is most are hitting below center on these shots.

Trying to teach the jump shot off the net is really hard to do. It would require a chapter in a book with numerous pictures for you to understand it all. I plan to film a DVD just on this subject soon and that will help you a lot seeing it actually done and in slow motion. There is no substitute for talking a lesson from a teaching pro and having him set you up with the proper basics of the shot.

Another method is the extension. I carry two jump cues. A short extension to go on my Schuler shaft and a stealth 3 piece jump cue I invented and designed. I sell the Stealth for $120. I use my normal playing cue, my Balabushka to jump over a half ball and can jump over a full ball a foot away.

However when going over a full ball I pull out my jump cue as it’s really tough to make with a play cue. The danger is you catch the top of the OB going over and fly off the table to foul. Even if you just graze or clip the top going over, the ball usually will begin jumping and go off the end of the table. Just about any short light cue will jump. You can take a 36” short cue and use it with some success. Cut off the end of a broom handle so it’s about 7 oz or less, chalk it up and its one hell of a jump cue which proves my point, light is what makes this work.
To jump well you will have to buy a good jump cue and there are boo coo of them out there. Any cue that is short and light will work and I feel 7 ozs is the right weight. 8 to 8.5 will work with the right design and with a very hard plastic tip. You want a very hard tip and I don’t like the plastic because I like to hit the jump draw and it’s too easy to miss cue with them. I use the Talisman XX leather layered tips I sell for $10. They are as hard as can be made and work great. I use the same tip on my break cue. A lot of venues and some leagues are now banning the plastic tip, so you are advised to swap yours out now for the XX leather.

Never practice a jump shot on another man’s table as it is as damaging to the cloth as a Masse shot. You are hitting down on the CB driving it into the cloth causing a little hole or divot. Just one hole will come back in a couple of days. The crushed fibers will spring back up and can be rubbed out some. It is a myth that this hole will later widen and become permanent and tear open showing the slate. I have never seen that happen. If you keep hitting the same jump or masse from the same spot that will occur. You will break down the threads and cause a permanent hole. You melt a little candle wax in the hole to fill it. Then bum some of the solid black spots they use to show you where to rack. Cut one in a smaller circle with scissors just a little bigger than the hole and press it down after the wax cooled and the hole is repaired. A ball will now roll over it without deflecting off its patch.

Yes it looks bad but it’s a quick cheap fix. The problem is the heat caused by the friction of the ball melts the dye in the cloth and it creates a white mark which does not go away. This is why I only want to sell 3 colors of cloth. These marks are caused by hitting shots jacked up and not using a level cue. By breaking the same way and soon they are all over the cloth. It looks like you shot it with a 12 gauge. The marks show up least on the light brown Camel color, then on the Electric light robin’s egg blue, then on the standard pool hall green. They are terrible on the dark colors like red, then dark blue or green or black. Do not ever use these colors. Yes your wife wants’ to match her wall paper. Forget what she wants. Just put on the right color and let her bitch later. Try and explain it to her after it’s installed. It won’t work but she will get over it.
Ask the room owner if he has an old cloth about to be replaced soon and if he would allow you to practice jump shots on it.

If you want to practice the jump on your table at home and do not want to trash your cloth then find a table being recovered and bum the old cloth which they are going to toss anyway. You want the thicker cheap house cloth and not a thin Simonis. Cut you a piece about a foot up and 2 feet to your left and right and lay it just off the rail on top of your cloth. This should help to reduce your impact marks. Keep shooting in different spots and keep moving the protective cloth around the table so one area does not get beat up. I do the same thing when I practice masses. I cut a piece of cloth that goes around the back of the ball so it leaves on my regular cloth but the tip impacts into the protective cloth which helps slow down the damage. I am still creating holes because my CB is sitting on my base cloth. You might practice Masses having your cue ball on top of the protective cloth like your jumps.

When two balls are real close to each other it’s really hard to get the CB over the top of the OB. This one definitely demands a lesson. You use just a shaft. You hold the shaft with your normal closed loop bridge; your index finger is around the shaft holding it. You hold the end of the shaft with only your index finger and thumb. You now throw the shaft through the grip left hand and turn loose the right hand. It is like tossing a spear at a fish, only your left index finger stays around the shaft flying through it. You aim the tip to hit high up on the CB and it bounces back off it and out of the way of the CB which comes up in the air behind it. This is a really advanced pro level shot few of you will be able to do.

The problem there is the shaft is the right weight, 4 oz, but it’s too short and you can’t get the right grip on the end of it. The Popper jumper is 4 oz, but it’s a full foot longer and now its amazing how close up you can jump. You do not stroke from the side, but in front of your chest over your right shoulder, which allows you to get up much higher than using the old stroke on the side of your body. When you guy the cue, I have a DVD which shows you how to use it and within a few days, you will be going over a full ball only a ball away, and most a half ball away. The higher the elevation you jack up, the faster, the quicker and the higher the cue ball rises.

My normal jump shots are with my 3 piece jump cue I use for going over half balls or longer shots. For closer higher jumps I remove a piece and use the 2 piece section. I like to bridge on the rail when I can because it allows me to have a higher angle in. You can’t get too high on these shots. So learn to shot off the rail. Set up a shot where you are only jump over the outside edges of the two OB’s and as you obtain success move them closer and closer together until both are touching and you are jumping over a full ball. Once you master that then remove one of the balls and just jump over one full ball over the very top of it. Keep moving it closer and closer until you reach a spot you cannot jump over consistently. Then measure that and memorize it. That is your performance zone. If a shot gets inside it you do not jump, you kick, Masse or play safe.
Most students who come to me for lessons on the jump need to hit the ball twice as hard as they are trying to do and they are not jacking up far and high enough.

How to draw a shot on the table.
When the table is first displayed all your controls will be on the bottom long rail. On the far left see an X and a ? Click the X, the rail fills up with options. I now drag and drop my Cb and Ob, then click and drag lines to display where they go. To the right of the ? I click the cue ball, then I drag the blue mark from the center and leave it on the ball where I want to show what English I am using. To the right of the side pocket I click the pool cue and it displays. To the right of this you see 3 little red boxes, go to the far one on the right, the 3rd one, and click it, then go to your post and the html code should then drop and display. To the right of this is a X, so if you mess up, you click the x and the table clears and you can start over. There are many more things you can do by studying the site but these are the main controls I use.

Set the CB so it can not fit past the two stripes where you see the A ball at. You jump over the inside edges of the two strips and it lands about where B is and pots 9 in the far corner.

I use the same tripod bridge I use to shoot over an OB to hit a CB only an inch apart from each other. That needs to be taught or studied in books. I hold the jump cue at the very end on the butt, very lightly with just my index finger and thumb. I use my regular stance to line up the angle of the shot but now just raise the back of my main arm up in the air as high as I can go. Do not chicken wing it out to the side. I raise my right foot up and now stand on my toe with my left foot flat on the floor which allows me to get higher. I make a long stroke not getting too close to the CB. I make a series of hard aggressive strokes and then whip my wrist into the shot hard, very hard. I do not hit the CB in the middle but sort of fan it thin on the front hitting below center low. This drive down into the ball produces a watermelon squirt like if you put your thumb down on one it jumps up. My tip impacts the cloth coming in at about a 60/70 degree angle. With a little practice the CB will begin to jump. Baby steps. It takes time to lose the fear of the shot and to hit it with confidence.
When the jump shot got hot in the early 90’s Sammy was running around telling everyone he was the greatest jumper of all time and that he could jump a ball 2” away which was world class. I faded that and he comes back saying he can jump a ball 1” away, I faded that. Then I ended it once and for all about who the friggen man was here. I jumped a ball no distance away, the two balls where side by side only separated by a C note, a hundred dollar bill which increased the height I had to jump. When I made that shot on tape, they all shut up.
I set the CB about l/16” next to the 5 ball and separated them with the bill. I then jumped the CB over the top of the 5 ball and the C note and landed on the 9 to pot it in the corner. That became known as the FL ultimate jump shot. Here is the amazing thing about it. I did it with my regular playing cue, a Falcon F-21 with a Triangle regular tip. The secret to the shot is the angle in, 90 degrees, straight up, which you never use in any masse or jump, and you always have an angle in. You fan the inside edge of the CB super hard, it’s actually a miss cue you hit so little of the ball and it squirts it up into the air not touching the 5 or the c note. You can Believe it, or Not. A kid in Europe ran across it a few years ago and did it too copying my shot and not giving me credit for it and sent a link around which created a sensation.

I present this shot just to show you what is possible and where the extreme edge of these shot can be. Now forget ever making it. DF’s 11’s are for a few select pros. These shots will drive you to drink so learn to just enjoy seeing them made and don’t frustrate yourself trying to do them. I have ruined thousands of dollars of tips, shafts and cloths trying to make them look easy. I have paid a high price for that success.
From the cue ball 2” off of the rail, I jumped over a full ball and off the back of a 9’ table. This was a cold jump not using a ramp ball. It’s on tape. The CB flew in the air, over the 5 ball, not touching the cloth or far end rail which it cleared over 9’ in the air, a world record. It has never been duplicated since 1995. The lesson is, low angle in, a long low jump. Very high angle in, a very how short jump takes place.

This shot was made in 1995 and will never be duplicated. I called it the shot from the Planet Zor and it is on tape and these shots were widely circulated in the mid 90’s which created who I am today. The guy who shoots impossible shots nobody else can make. It is on tape. The world record was jumping over 14 balls using a ramp ball to do it which makes it easy. I jumped over 22 balls cold jumping the cue ball off the cloth, using no ramp ball. The table diagram does not give me enough balls to show 22 but it was a long string of them and the CB flew over all 22 not touching one of them landing on the other side, then jumping through a wood rack standing up right, where the pool cue is, the diagram does not allow me to draw the rack. The cue ball thins the 8 and 9, cross banking both of them to pot in the opposite corner pocket marked A. I considered this one of the top 10 greatest trick shots hit of all time.

A beginner in pool is like a golfer playing 18 holes with just one club. I can easily defeat Tiger Woods with my 14 clubs if I make him play with just 1 club. I have many options and shots, he only has a few. When I graduate a student, he has 30 clubs. His quiver is full of many arrows to shoot. There is no shot he does not know about and cannot produce.
The better players are defeating you because they simply know more than you and have greater experience. You are in the 3rd grade, the best players beating you just graduated from College and are about to begin their MBA’s. You can cut this distance down between you two fast with a good coach, study, practice and hard work. It won’t happen by you just beating balls around. It will only happen if you acquire knowledge by expanding your repertoire of shots.

The mind of every creature be it great or small is the master of its own body.

You must learn the difference between animal passion and true love. In the end, you lose whatever you love. It is all fleeting. You cannot hang on to anything for long. Everything around you is constantly changing. That is why you experience pain, there is loss. If you do not wish pain of the heart then do not seek love or attachments. The longer you live, the more you lose. To love, means to suffer pain. For some who are lucky in love, they experience more love than pain. Others are not so lucky.

The only other option is to reject worldly possessions, passions, all family ties and live as a monk or priest and seek purity and enlightenment. There can be love in that quest.

Those are the only two paths to happiness. The third one is to become a predator who only takes, who gives no love, and only leaves sorrow in his path. That is the path to hell. When your judgment day comes and your book is read, it is empty of love and that condemns your soul. To free yourself of life's passions and possessions is where total freedom lies. It then puts you on the path of enlightenment which the only way to pure peace in your heart.

An ignorant person is one who doesn't know what you have just found out.

Handle every stressful situation like a dog, pee on it and walk away. Learn not to put up with Turkeys or to take she-yit off anyone. A dog will not play a losing game. Put them in one where they cannot win and they like a little 4 year old child, will simply pick up their toys, quit and walk away. But adults allow their selves to be put in traps and cages where they cannot win in life or love and condemn their selves to unhappiness. They do not realize they have the key to their cell and only them, can set their selves free. You just get out the back Jack, make a new plan Stan, and set yourself free.

In life, or in sports, when you are losing, do something. Change the plan of combat or your attack. Become more defensive, try and throw off the other person. Do something drastic, you might get lucky and then win. If you don’t do something you are doomed to lose.

If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, then it is yours forever. If it does not come back, then hunt the SOB down and kill it. If you can’t find it and it got away, and it doesn’t come back, that means it was never yours to begin with and it was smarter than you and wise enough to get away from you. But if it is now sitting in your living room, messes up your stuff, eats all your food to the point you had to put a lock on the fridge, uses your money and telephone, and does not appear to realize you have set it free, and it has tattoos and rings in its nose and spike purple hair, or it has thunder thighs and saggy tits, then you either gave birth to it, or you married it. Cut off the food and cancel the cell phones, maybe it will then leave.

I always figured I would die young and leave a good looking corpse. I almost did die 8 times, but somehow cheated death like the black cat.
