You probably heard the old sports joke, "I went to the fights last night, and a hockey game broke out."
It is funny, but sadly true.
The events that are happening today in sports are becoming more and more violent each passing day...the brawls on soccer fields across the world...the fights in hockey are almost expected...a tight inside pitch in baseball starts a rumble in the infield...an elbow on a rebound brings about a shoving match in basketball...and everywhere is there trash talk. People are killed with pool cues, guns and knives every week in pool halls.
Just within the past few years the world of sports has shown its dark side. These are but a few of the dIsgraceful actIons that have been wIdely reported In the medIa...a professional football player is charged with the murder of his pregnant wife...another NFL athlete attacks a referee with a head butt, because of a thrown penalty flag hits him in the eye...the Los Angles Dodgers get into a brawl with the fans in Wrigley Field in Chicago when a fan reaches over the dugout and steals a player's hat...an All-Pro tight end is charged with sexual assault of a minor...domestic abuse is rampant...an NBA basketball player attacks and chokes his head coach...a very successful collegiate basketball coach is fined $30,000 for his actions towards his athletes and is put on zero-tolerance probation...an NHL hockey player slashes an opponent across the head and renders him unconsious and in serious condition in the hospital...a former heavyweight champion boxer bites off part of his opponents ear during a bout.
Athletic Principle
What was the cause of this violence? Uncontrolled emotional anger. You see anger everywhere in sports. Cheap shots, trash talk, then retaliation. Now you can see countless expressions of anger even at the youth level of sports. Why? Because it is modeled for us on TV by the athletes whom we idolize. It is beginning to become the norm in sports, rather than a taboo.
From a performance standpoint, a number of things can happen, which are all bad when an athlete has anger building up inside his heart. First the athlete loses their focus. Instead of concentrating on the task at hand, thoughts drift to how to physically attack an opponent. It can be a kick, a trip, an elbow, a slash, a slide intended to take out the legs, a high tight fastball, a clip, or even a punch below the belt. The result can be varied; sometimes you will get a way with it, sometimes a foul or a penalty will be issued, sometimes an ejection will result, sometimes a fight will occur, and sometimes the person who retaliates is penalized and the offender gets off free.
In any result, uncontrolled anger has consequences. Not only for the athlete, but for the team as well. Because of anger, an athlete can forget his purpose. Assignments are missed and the team suffers. An ejection can put a team and its coach on an emotional roller coaster with the untimely loss of a key starter. Unchecked anger is potentially dangerous.
I have seen two APA teams erupt into a total free for all battle busting up chairs over each others heads that would make a Hollywood bar fight sceen in a movie if they had taped it. Parents do the same thing at little league baseball games.
How then do we handle anger?
God's Performance Principle
Anger unfortunately is human nature. The Bible talks about the "burning anger" of Samson (Judges 14:19), and even King David, who the Bible calls "a man after God's own heart," burned with anger (2 Samuel 12:5). All of us at some time or another have to deal with anger. God knows this, and His Word, the Bible talks at length about it.
God is calling us to a higher standard. God is described as holy, and we are called "to be holy as God is holy." Holiness is to separate yourself from sin and to conform with the very character and heart of God.
"But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy." (1 Peter 1:15-16) God is also described as "slow to anger and abounding in love" at total of six times in the Bible. As children of God, He wants us to have the same character qualities...slow to anger and abounding in love. Even God got angry with His chosen people of Israel when they continually disobeyed Him. We are told that, "Time after time he restrained his anger," (Psalm 78:38). So then what key wisdom can God impart on us to restrain our anger? "A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under-control." (Proverbs 29:11) Be wise. Keep your self under control. Walk away. Count to ten. Refocus. Don't get caught in the trap of pride when self-talk tells you to retaliate. Say no to the voices that tell you, "You can't do that to me! I'll show you!" Keep your anger in check. "In your anger do not sin; Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold." (Ephesians 4:26) If you anger is left unchecked, if you do not refocus, you will be capable of sinning. How? By going after the person your mad at. God tells us to deal with anger now! Don't let a day pass and let that anger build to an explosive force in your heart. "My dear brothers, take not of this: Everyone should be quick to listen. Slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires." (James 1:20) God desires that you listen carefully and think before you speak. If you fail to listen, if you are quick with your tongue, this can cause anger to boil up within your heart. This is God's will for you and by following His will, anger will be kept in check. "Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, for you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared." (Proverbs 22:24-25) King Solomon, in all of his wisdom writes that your choice of friends is important. Watch out with whom you hang out with. Your friends can rub off on you, and you may become just like them - you may just get trapped because of who you run with. "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." (Proverbs 29:11) You need to keep your cool. If you do, you will control your temper. A soft spoken word will turn away anger, but uncontrolled shouts of anger will incite anger. The key here is your response - you will reap what you sow. If you respond in love, you will get love back. If you respond in anger, anger will be returned back to you. Jesus speaking, "But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment." (Matthew 5:22) Jesus gives us the final word on anger. Don't get angry! For it you do, you will be judged for it. You really don't want to go there! It is a sin with consequences. Avoid sin - run from it.
Anger will knock on your door at almost any moment. How do you answer? By being wise, under self-control, with a listening ear, a slow to speak response that is gentle in nature. Keep your focus. Keep your temper in check. If you can follow God's game plan, anger will no longer be a troubled spot in any area of your performance.

There is a reason that most anger management classes do not work. A person has to know why they are angry to stop being angry.

Anger originates from insecurity,ego and hurt. if a player does not realize why they are angry,any technique used is like bandaid on an amputation.

When i was first playing pool I got mad when I lost to a sandbagger, or if i lost because I played badly. i was so in ego about not looking bad to my team, that my emotions got messed up. Ego fed insecurity and that fed anger and so forth. Once I dropped the ego bs, I was okay. But I know, if i find myself angry about a pool game, it is my ego.

Well that is my opinion, for what it is worth.

But the problem is, a hustler, a con, a gambler, a scumie, will put an anger shark on you. He will do things on purpose to set you off, so you will get upset, drop adrenalin, then you are toast and easy meat. I do that to all of my students, just to see how they react to it.

Most can't believe I do that. I win and laugh at them, rub it in. Then we discuss the emotion of that. I keep doing it, until the student learns to deal with it. When I no longer can get to him, I then leave him alone, he has learned that lesson. he is now FL proof, and if I can't get to him, trust me, nobody can now. I could get mother teresa foaming at the mouth at me.

My father used to say, when you loose your head, your ass soon follows. These shark attacks are an act, a scripted routine they pull, just to see if they work. Low rent, but these are low rent people who pull them.

FL,

You started off this post with all sorts of examples of violence in athletics. I remember playing little league ball (I am only 27 so it wasn't that long ago) and intentionally trying to spark some sort of emotional response in my opponents. I didn't know exactly what I was doing at the time, but it seems clear to me now. We were brought up to believe that you have to play sports with emotions to reach the peak of your game. That if you didn't get fired up and play your a$$ off that you weren't pulling your weight for the team. So we brought emotions to the game early on and that just continues to fester and breed more emotions through the years. By the time a player get to the pro-level they are jammed packed full of emotions, adrenaline, and the fear that they will be seen as not macho. That they will be discounted as a half-a$$ player.

Now, the flip side of this is the lack of emotion. The crux of mental control and emotionally stillness. This is what I have been striving for during my pool matches. This has been a huge topic of conversation on this board for a while. And it finally seems to be that the professionals in sports have decided that mental/emotional control is the begining of greatness. Look at Barry Bonds, cool as a cucumber standing up there at the plate. He is disappointed when he is intentionally walked, but he doesn't get mad. I can get under the skin of the people I am playing now just by not letting them get to me. No matter what happens at the table, I just smile at them and make the next run of balls. I put all the pressure onto them and make them the ones who are sweating at the table. If you can control your own mind, you will be able to control your game.

Getting pumped up, excited, is great for running sports like Tennis, basketball, football, baseball, etc. Droping adrenalin is a helper. In pool it is a disaster. You have to keep cool and not let your self get excited. Anger and all emotions must be tightly controlled.

The adrenal gland is a very important organ in the human body. The body has two adrenal glands, one riding on top of each Kidney. They are also called suparnenals and they can do super things. They have two parts, the medulla inner core and the cortex outer shell.
The medulola is controlled by the nervous system. Nerve signals prompt the medulla to secrete epinephrine adrenalin and norepinphrine into the blood. These are extremely powerful drugs that work very fast to help the body adjust to sudden stresses.
The cortex is controlled by the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland stimulates the cortex to secrete hormones into the blood as well. Some of these hormones including cortisol and aldosterone help regulate salt and sugar balances in the body. These balances are so important that a person would die if they were not constantly maintained. The beauty is this works automatically with out our control.

Adrenalin is a registered trade name for the drug epinephrine, which is a hormone that is normally secreted into the blood by the adrenal glands when there is a stress command placed. Feel stress, the drug is dropped.
In the body, it is trying to regulate proper blood pressure at a normal level until the brains says dump the main load; we have a crisis, main line this guy now.

When a person becomes angry or frightened the adrenal glands pour large amounts of epinephyrine into the blood. It works very quickly and has a sudden impact. It is Gods design for primitive man to see a Lion that wants to have him for lunch, and get a sudden super human burst of energy so he can run to the tree for safety. In primitive man this was a very cool tool, in modern man, it can be more of a curse than a helper.

There are many reports of small women seeing a car jack slip and fall on their child working on a car and a 100 lb lady lifts the car up so he can escape. Super human things can be done when this super drug main lines your veins. It also sends all of your emotions totally bonkers. Most of us have had someone cut us off in traffic and flip us the bird and felt rage go wild, people kill each other from road rage all the time. That was an adrenal drop. When rage hits and the drug drops, you can be mentally insane for 30 seconds. When you feel rage, that is why the old saying, close your eyes and slowly count to 10, that is allowing the first rush of the drug, the most powerful jolt, to slowly begin to dissipate. The hormones being dropped as well are meant to make the body more efficient for fight or flight. That’s great news if you want to duke it out in a bar or run to a tree from a hungry Lion.

This can be good for a football, basket ball or tennis player who run to win. It is however death to a golfer or pool player who can stand there and look at the ball for minutes before striking it. That is why you see so much choking and collapses coming down the stretch in both games. We have too much time to think about it and set up the choke.
If you are playing pool and get angry or scared you can cause a full adrenal drop, you are now toast. Kiss your bippy goodbye. They can stick a fork in your behind because you are now well done.

The epinephrine causes the muscles in the walls of the arties to contract, thus slowing the bleeding from the expected wounds from the fight or the Lion attack so you won’t bleed to death. The drug relaxes muscles in the bronchi, which are the large air passages into the lungs so you can have more air to run farther faster. Everything has changed all of your touch and feel is gone. You can’t hit your butt with a broom and have no clue where whitey is now going. Your entire nervous system is spiked through the roof. Your heart is now racing and your have no fight to perform or no tree to run to, all you have is your veins now filled with this powerful drug and every system in your cpu is screaming red alert, red alert.

Now tell me how you are going to play pool with all that going on. The answer is, you are not. You are done. Depending on the situation, the amount of the drop can vary a lot, from a full main line to a lighter amount. You must learn to recognize the symptoms and realize when you get hit with a drop. I can remember when this used to happen to me before I got it under control I would be sitting in a chair and my arm would be shaking so violently I would have to hold it still so nobody would see it. You vision can blur and you can become mentally confused. You can cripple your self so you can barely play or run 2 balls.

There is a second crippling affect that strikes the upper level players. I remember once I was gambling with a top stick who I had always had problems beating and got loose and ran 6 racks in a row on him in a row I was so excited about it, finally I got to drop this bum and I was so pumped up that during the7th rack I went brain dead. You just stand there like a statue unable to move like a deer in the road blinded by headlights.

I asked my surgeon pal who checks all of my articles for accuracy that have medical terms in them what happened to me and he explained to me how the brain works is simple. I had too much data coming in to the central cpu. Too much emotion and cpu could not process it all so to prevent blowing a fuse or a melt down burning wires cpu just threw a circuit breaker which shut me down which explains me standing there frozen. I can’t move because I am waiting for instructions on what to do and none is coming in. This crippling affect can also be prevented as well by just staying calm and not letting your emotions run wild. So when and if that occurs to you and you see your self frozen and can not move or think, stop the game now. Make an excuse and head to the head and sit on the stool and calm down by deep breathing exercises. You all need to buy tapes and books on this subject and learn how to do this and how to meditate. It is a vital tool to own. Never play on when this or an adrenalin rush hits you. When you see the signs realize you screwed up and you just screwed your game into the dirt. Buy time to recover and to come back and play.

Stop what you are doing immediately. Make some excuse like you have just become very ill and have to take an immediate break. Go into the rest room, open a stall, go in & lock the door and sit on the stool until the drug wears off. If they come looking for you and ask what is going on say I have a case of the trots, must be the bad Chinese food I ate. Work with me here please, I’ll be out in just a minute. Most will buy this lie. It’s lie, lose or DQ, your choice of the three out comes. I prefer the little white lie my self.

That might take 5 or 10 minutes. If you continue to play in that condition, you will lose every time. I would risk a DQ than go on and play to a certain defeat. If you continue to play after the drop by the time the drug wears off, you are now so far behind you can’t catch up or the match is over. If you are forced back on the floor with out a full recovery then go into a massive slow down until you feel your have returned to normal. Just sit on the stool with your eyes closed and deep breath trying to relax between shots. Just slowly calm your self down and slow down your heart beat and breathing. Take a full minute between every shot. Stall all you can.

Before I gained control of my emotions by using Zen, I remember I was playing a world champion and I wanted to do well, his name was Willie. I did not expect to win, I just wanted some respect. I had played him once before and almost beat the guy, running 75 out of the chute in a game of 100 when I got the first shot. He came to the table and ran 100 and out on me, I was shocked by that. I was not scared of him the first match, but when I played him the 2nd time I was now terrified of the guy. I can remember sitting there waiting to play and I was so scared my leg was shaking. It began to shake so bad I had to hold it down. I was literally falling apart, my emotions turned to mush. I let adrenal drop and when I got the first shot, I only ran 12 and missed. Mosconi ran 100 and out again on me.

I played great the first match being loose and confident. The 2nd match I played like a dog. That is what happens to you when you lose control of your emotions, you are finished. The lesson I learned that day was never fear any man in any game. So you lose, they don’t chop off your head. The only chance you have to win is to play them totally fast and loose. After that sank in, I beat a dozen world champions just by coming after them hard, fast and loose out of the chute, showing no fear. I never got to play Mosconi a 3rd time, not that I might have won. During the time I played him, he was virtually UN beatable, because he feared no one. That little prick would be virtually running around the table and when he would trot by he would give you this little smirk of disrespect which meant sausage, I am the man and you are going down. He would whip the eye of the Tiger on you for sure. He would set off all kinds of emotions in you. Fear, anger, hate, which are killers to a pool player. Never let fear of losing to anyone affects you. Fear is your greatest enemy; you must remain calm at all times. No fear, just say it over and over when you play.

Jimmy Caras who was one of my life long teacher and also Irving Crane who I never worked with but told me the same thing. 90% of who they played came to the table defeated. They lost badly because they were scared and choked. They said to beat most of them all they had to do was dazzle them with a little run and they folded faster than a Kmart blue light special $2 car table. They expect you to fold and 90% of you comply. They are loose and confident, you are up tight and choking like a dog during the lag.

You must be conscious of your little pouch of drugs sitting on top of your Kidneys just waiting to dump into your veins, let that happen, your are a loser. Now you know it’s vital you remain calm and relaxed and not let anything going on around you to affect you. Number one; have no fear of your opponent, so what he’s this or that, all he can do is win, life goes on after that for you. If you are gambling, some roadies will get aggressive if you’re winning and get in your face to cause an argument, some can get nasty, even threatening. They want you to drop your load and go off on it, that is what that is all about. Be smarter than that, just smile in their face and scold them for being rude and ask them politely to sit down. When they see they cannot provoke you into anger and rage, they won’t waste their time doing it again.

See Zen as your shield, it protects you from these emotions, keeps them at bay, and you will never have a disastrous adrenal drop ever again if you are a Zen player, it is impossible for that to occur. Just keep smiling and humming your tune, whistle while you work, and be happy in your work running out on the other guy so he does not get a shot. At the pro level, 90% of the game is mental, mental control of your emotions and concentration and focus. You learn to keep your emotions on a level keel where they never go up or down. If you dog the 9 to win a game you sit down feeling no emotions. No anger. If you win the game the same thing. You must learn to not let your emotions spike.

Even the total beginner should begin learning these vital concepts and techniques from the get go. Never ever beat your self or shoot your own self in the foot. If you are a league player, you see this happen in almost every match played. You sit back from afar and probably wonder why, how can these people do these things, how can they dog a game ball that’s a hanger in the hole, then you get up and do the same thing your self. It is all because you people do not control you and your emotions; everything around you is controlling you. Until you put a stop to this madness and take control of you and your destiny, nothing changes.

My teacher Minnesota Fats a half-century ago said to me and I quote, “Only a sausage, a sucker puts heat on himself. Why would you want to do that, make your self into a loser, that don’t make no sense. Why would you shoot your own self in your foot or cripple your self so you can not play. How dumb is that? You must learn how to control your emotions. Pressure in self-induced, only you can put it on, only you can take it off. It’s a feel game, you can’t play it if you lock your self up tight. You have to play it with a natural flow, fast and loose, nice and calm with a smile on your face when you see the game ball, because you know you’re a winner and you never dog the game ball, so pay day just arrived. “You say to your self, I never miss the game ball for da cash, ah yes indeed. When it falls you say, how sweet it is to the sausage you just beat. It’s all about confidence. That you can not have too much of.
So just relax and play fast and loose. Just say, no fear and freewheel on the other guy. Never fear losing or looking bad. Just play your best stick and let the out come happen naturally. Pool is simple, you win some, you lose some. Get used to losing, nobody wins every time. NEVER FEAR LOSING.

Many of you have a disease. As you know it is incurable. You will have it till the day you die. You are ashamed of having it so you hide your affliction from every one you know. It is called chokeritis. Now Doctor Larry can’t cure your disease or give you a magic pill to end it but I can write you a prescription for you that can reduce the out breaks. Yes, every one chokes. I have even seen Mosconi choke like a dog and Tiger Woods as well but they catch their selves doing this and pull out of it fast and resume normal play.

Not all do recover. I saw Arnold Palmer once choke so badly he hit two ground balls beheading gofers on the 18th hole to lose like a dog in Atlanta. . I also saw AP with a 6 stroke lead at the US Open blow it coming down the stretch with only 6 holes to play. I also saw AP play like a God and win 60 championships. We saw Greg Norman do the same thing at the Masters with a 6 stroke lead where he was playing perfect and suddenly he is playing like a 20 handicap. That is what out of control emotions can do to any one no matter whom they are. They can turn a God into a hacker.

Like in AA you must get up in front of your pals and confess, I am a choking dog. I have the disease Chokeritis and I am now in therapy with FL trying to make a recovery. Yell it out to the multitudes and get it off your chest. No more secrets or hidden fears. Come out of the closet Brucie. You must stop hiding the fact you are a choking dog. Once you admit this then you are on the road to recovery where you slowly become a winner and then one day your pals give you your new handle you earned, the ice man. You will then be feared by all and they will be choking when they play you.

Now your goal is to prevent choking by stopping adrenalin dropping and playing in this calm slow demeanor in a state of relaxed grace. You want to learn how to drop into dead stroke, or even the zone. The more you practice this the less you choke. Remember chokeritis can not be cured, it can only be controlled. When you do choke and lose badly don’t get up set about it. Just study why and how it occurred and try to learn from that mistake and not allow it to happen again. Type B people do better with this than anxious nervous type A’s. So when you play pool, hang loose dude. Stay cool and don’t let any thing or any one upset or affect you. Just whistle while you work and run out on the other guy. If you don’t miss then there is no way the other guy can win.

You get what you come for or the lesson is free. Larry says you have to shoot a good stick to teach an advanced lesson or to tear down a pros game and put it back in shape. He is known as a high end finisher but he also takes on total beginners.

Larry plays on six pro pool tours. His tour 9 ball cards are: the UPA, the men’s main 9 ball tour where he ranks 35th in the world in mid 2006. He also plays on the Viking Pro 9 ball tour, Florida 9 ball tour, SE pro 9 ball tour, the Senior Tour and the APTSA (Artistic Pool and Trick Shot Association world tour. Larry is also listed on the tour stats as having one of the highest straight pool runs in history of 274 balls which is directly behind Ralph Greenleaf’s record.
He holds the world record for the high run in rotation, 5 racks, 75 balls. His high run of 9 racks in 9 ball was only done twice on the pro PBT tour.
His high run in 8 ball is 8 racks. He is regarded as the greatest shot maker of all time by many hall of famers and world champions. Einstein said there are 6 million possible shots and Larry has made all 6 million of them. He has made and duplicated every shot ever made on a table during the last two centuries. He holds 20 world records in the sport.

You must develop a pure perfect stroke you can trust and that will take a coach and a advanced level teacher. When you build that perfect stroke and get in dead punch you can now go play some serious pool. Now the game is won and lost between the 6” of your ears. You next master the mental side of the game.
Memorize this and when you need it, recite it to your self in the chair. It will pull you many future victories you would have let slip away.
To become great, you must learn to reach deep down inside to pull out that extra edge it will take for you to win. FL say’s only the good die young, God allows all pool hustlers to live till they are 85 so they can suffer. If I knew I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of my self. I had a damn good run and more time here than I expected or planned for so if it all ends tomorrow, no tears, I lived 3 life times in the same span a normal man lives one. When I die I want to be cremated and my ashes sprinkled inside a Super Wal-Mart, then I’ll know my kids will finally come to see me twice a week. Actually my ashes will be sprinkled off the far point of lovers Key in Bonita Springs, Florida.
There was always only three things important to me. Panther Piss, Pussy and Pool, the big 3. Get those 3 right and then as Lamata said, the rest of it don’t matta no how. About FL’s 20 world records, some try and dispute them, FL’s answer is you have two choice’s here, you can believe it, or you can believe it not, FL does not really give a damn which one you get on because he knows he did them all and is done fighting any one about them. He proved every one of them by the Guinness world book of records standards back in the mid 90’s. On each record, a full press release, with the video tape and signed affidavits of the witnesses were sent out to over 175 interested parties in the industry. 18 of his 20 records were set not in a pool hall, but at Georgia Tech University and filmed by an independent studio, TTN. Nobody had ever proved any thing as complete and perfect as Larry did.
To him it’s now a mute point dude. He goes out to his glory knowing what he did. The adrenal gland is a very important organ in the human body. The body has two adrenal glands, one riding on top of each Kidney. They are also called suparnenals and they can do super things. They have two parts, the medulla inner core and the cortex outer shell.
The medulola is controlled by the nervous system. Nerve signals prompt the medulla to secrete epinephrine adrenalin and norepinphrine into the blood. These are extremely powerful drugs that work very fast to help the body adjust to sudden stresses.
The cortex is controlled by the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland stimulates the cortex to secrete hormones into the blood as well. Some of these hormones including cortisol and aldosterone help regulate salt and sugar balances in the body. These balances are so important that a person would die if they were not constantly maintained. The beauty is this works automatically with out our control.

Adrenalin is a registered trade name for the drug epinephrine, which is a hormone that is normally secreted into the blood by the adrenal glands when there is a stress command placed. Feel stress, the drug is dropped.
In the body, it is trying to regulate proper blood pressure at a normal level until the brains says dump the main load; we have a crisis, main line this guy now.

When a person becomes angry or frightened the adrenal glands pour large amounts of epinephyrine into the blood. It works very quickly and has a sudden impact. It is Gods design for primitive man to see a Lion that wants to have him for lunch, and get a sudden super human burst of energy so he can run to the tree for safety. In primitive man this was a very cool tool, in modern man, it can be more of a curse than a helper.

There are many reports of small women seeing a car jack slip and fall on their child working on a car and a 100 lb lady lifts the car up so he can escape. Super human things can be done when this super drug main lines your veins. It also sends all of your emotions totally bonkers. Most of us have had someone cut us off in traffic and flip us the bird and felt rage go wild, people kill each other from road rage all the time. That was an adrenal drop. When rage hits and the drug drops, you can be mentally insane for 30 seconds. When you feel rage, that is why the old saying, close your eyes and slowly count to 10, that is allowing the first rush of the drug, the most powerful jolt, to slowly begin to dissipate. The hormones being dropped as well are meant to make the body more efficient for fight or flight. That’s great news if you want to duke it out in a bar or run to a tree from a hungry Lion.

This can be good for a football, basket ball or tennis player who run to win. It is however death to a golfer or pool player who can stand there and look at the ball for minutes before striking it. That is why you see so much choking and collapses coming down the stretch in both games. We have too much time to think about it and set up the choke.
If you are playing pool and get angry or scared you can cause a full adrenal drop, you are now toast. Kiss your bippy goodbye. They can stick a fork in your behind because you are now well done.

The epinephrine causes the muscles in the walls of the arties to contract, thus slowing the bleeding from the expected wounds from the fight or the Lion attack so you won’t bleed to death. The drug relaxes muscles in the bronchi, which are the large air passages into the lungs so you can have more air to run farther faster. Everything has changed all of your touch and feel is gone. You can’t hit your butt with a broom and have no clue where ###### is now going. Your entire nervous system is spiked through the roof. Your heart is now racing and your have no fight to perform or no tree to run to, all you have is your veins now filled with this powerful drug and every system in your cpu is screaming red alert, red alert.

Now tell me how you are going to play pool with all that going on. The answer is, you are not. You are done. Depending on the situation, the amount of the drop can vary a lot, from a full main line to a lighter amount. You must learn to recognize the symptoms and realize when you get hit with a drop. I can remember when this used to happen to me before I got it under control I would be sitting in a chair and my arm would be shaking so violently I would have to hold it still so nobody would see it. You vision can blur and you can become mentally confused. You can cripple your self so you can barely play or run 2 balls.

There is a second crippling affect that strikes the upper level players. I remember once I was gambling with a top stick who I had always had problems beating and got loose and ran 6 racks in a row on him in a row I was so excited about it, finally I got to drop this bum and I was so pumped up that during the7th rack I went brain dead. You just stand there like a statue unable to move like a deer in the road blinded by headlights.

I asked my surgeon pal who checks all of my articles for accuracy that have medical terms in them what happened to me and he explained to me how the brain works is simple. I had too much data coming in to the central cpu. Too much emotion and cpu could not process it all so to prevent blowing a fuse or a melt down burning wires cpu just threw a circuit breaker which shut me down which explains me standing there frozen. I can’t move because I am waiting for instructions on what to do and none is coming in. This crippling affect can also be prevented as well by just staying calm and not letting your emotions run wild. So when and if that occurs to you and you see your self frozen and can not move or think, stop the game now. Make an excuse and head to the head and sit on the stool and calm down by deep breathing exercises. You all need to buy tapes and books on this subject and learn how to do this and how to meditate. It is a vital tool to own. Never play on when this or an adrenalin rush hits you. When you see the signs realize you screwed up and you just screwed your game into the dirt. Buy time to recover and to come back and play.

Stop what you are doing immediately. Make some excuse like you have just become very ill and have to take an immediate break. Go into the rest room, open a stall, go in & lock the door and sit on the stool until the drug wears off. If they come looking for you and ask what is going on say I have a case of the trots, must be the bad Chinese food I ate. Work with me here please, I’ll be out in just a minute. Most will buy this lie. It’s lie, lose or DQ, your choice of the three out comes. I prefer the little white lie my self.

That might take 5 or 10 minutes. If you continue to play in that condition, you will lose every time. I would risk a DQ than go on and play to a certain defeat. If you continue to play after the drop by the time the drug wears off, you are now so far behind you can’t catch up or the match is over. If you are forced back on the floor with out a full recovery then go into a massive slow down until you feel your have returned to normal. Just sit on the stool with your eyes closed and deep breath trying to relax between shots. Just slowly calm your self down and slow down your heart beat and breathing. Take a full minute between every shot. Stall all you can.

Before I gained control of my emotions by using Zen, I remember I was playing a world champion and I wanted to do well, his name was Willie. I did not expect to win, I just wanted some respect. I had played him once before and almost beat the guy, running 75 out of the chute in a game of 100 when I got the first shot. He came to the table and ran 100 and out on me, I was shocked by that. I was not scared of him the first match, but when I played him the 2nd time I was now terrified of the guy. I can remember sitting there waiting to play and I was so scared my leg was shaking. It began to shake so bad I had to hold it down. I was literally falling apart, my emotions turned to mush. I let adrenal drop and when I got the first shot, I only ran 12 and missed. Mosconi ran 100 and out again on me.

I played great the first match being loose and confident. The 2nd match I played like a dog. That is what happens to you when you lose control of your emotions, you are finished. The lesson I learned that day was never fear any man in any game. So you lose, they don’t chop off your head. The only chance you have to win is to play them totally fast and loose. After that sank in, I beat a dozen world champions just by coming after them hard, fast and loose out of the chute, showing no fear. I never got to play Mosconi a 3rd time, not that I might have won. During the time I played him, he was virtually UN beatable, because he feared no one. That little ###### would be virtually running around the table and when he would trot by he would give you this little smirk of disrespect which meant sausage, I am the man and you are going down. He would whip the eye of the Tiger on you for sure. He would set off all kinds of emotions in you. Fear, anger, hate, which are killers to a pool player. Never let fear of losing to anyone affects you. Fear is your greatest enemy; you must remain calm at all times. No fear, just say it over and over when you play.

Jimmy Caras who was one of my life long teacher and also Irving Crane who I never worked with but told me the same thing. 90% of who they played came to the table defeated. They lost badly because they were scared and choked. They said to beat most of them all they had to do was dazzle them with a little run and they folded faster than a Kmart blue light special $2 car table. They expect you to fold and 90% of you comply. They are loose and confident, you are up tight and choking like a dog during the lag.

You must be conscious of your little pouch of drugs sitting on top of your Kidneys just waiting to dump into your veins, let that happen, your are a loser. Now you know it’s vital you remain calm and relaxed and not let anything going on around you to affect you. Number one; have no fear of your opponent, so what he’s this or that, all he can do is win, life goes on after that for you. If you are gambling, some roadies will get aggressive if you’re winning and get in your face to cause an argument, some can get nasty, even threatening. They want you to drop your load and go off on it, that is what that is all about. Be smarter than that, just smile in their face and scold them for being rude and ask them politely to sit down. When they see they cannot provoke you into anger and rage, they won’t waste their time doing it again.

See Zen as your shield, it protects you from these emotions, keeps them at bay, and you will never have a disastrous adrenal drop ever again if you are a Zen player, it is impossible for that to occur. Just keep smiling and humming your tune, whistle while you work, and be happy in your work running out on the other guy so he does not get a shot. At the pro level, 90% of the game is mental, mental control of your emotions and concentration and focus. You learn to keep your emotions on a level keel where they never go up or down. If you dog the 9 to win a game you sit down feeling no emotions. No anger. If you win the game the same thing. You must learn to not let your emotions spike.

Even the total beginner should begin learning these vital concepts and techniques from the get go. Never ever beat your self or shoot your own self in the foot. If you are a league player, you see this happen in almost every match played. You sit back from afar and probably wonder why, how can these people do these things, how can they dog a game ball that’s a hanger in the hole, then you get up and do the same thing your self. It is all because you people do not control you and your emotions; everything around you is controlling you. Until you put a stop to this madness and take control of you and your destiny, nothing changes.

My teacher Minnesota Fats a half-century ago said to me and I quote, “Only a sausage, a sucker puts heat on himself. Why would you want to do that, make your self into a loser, that don’t make no sense. Why would you shoot your own self in your foot or cripple your self so you can not play. How dumb is that? You must learn how to control your emotions. Pressure in self-induced, only you can put it on, only you can take it off. It’s a feel game, you can’t play it if you lock your self up tight. You have to play it with a natural flow, fast and loose, nice and calm with a smile on your face when you see the game ball, because you know you’re a winner and you never dog the game ball, so pay day just arrived. “You say to your self, I never miss the game ball for da cash, ah yes indeed. When it falls you say, how sweet it is to the sausage you just beat. It’s all about confidence. That you can not have too much of.
So just relax and play fast and loose. Just say, no fear and freewheel on the other guy. Never fear losing or looking bad. Just play your best stick and let the out come happen naturally. Pool is simple, you win some, you lose some. Get used to losing, nobody wins every time. NEVER FEAR LOSING.

Many of you have a disease. As you know it is incurable. You will have it till the day you die. You are ashamed of having it so you hide your affliction from every one you know. It is called chokeritis. Now Doctor Larry can’t cure your disease or give you a magic pill to end it but I can write you a prescription for you that can reduce the out breaks. Yes, every one chokes. I have even seen Mosconi choke like a dog and Tiger Woods as well but they catch their selves doing this and pull out of it fast and resume normal play.

Not all do recover. I saw Arnold Palmer once choke so badly he hit two ground balls beheading gofers on the 18th hole to lose like a dog in Atlanta. . I also saw AP with a 6 stroke lead at the US Open blow it coming down the stretch with only 6 holes to play. I also saw AP play like a God and win 60 championships. We saw Greg Norman do the same thing at the Masters with a 6 stroke lead where he was playing perfect and suddenly he is playing like a 20 handicap. That is what out of control emotions can do to any one no matter whom they are. They can turn a God into a hacker.

Like in AA you must get up in front of your pals and confess, I am a choking dog. I have the disease Chokeritis and I am now in therapy with FL trying to make a recovery. Yell it out to the multitudes and get it off your chest. No more secrets or hidden fears. Come out of the closet Brucie. You must stop hiding the fact you are a choking dog. Once you admit this then you are on the road to recovery where you slowly become a winner and then one day your pals give you your new handle you earned, the ice man. You will then be feared by all and they will be choking when they play you.

Now your goal is to prevent choking by stopping adrenalin dropping and playing in this calm slow demeanor in a state of relaxed grace. You want to learn how to drop into dead stroke, or even the zone. The more you practice this the less you choke. Remember chokeritis can not be cured, it can only be controlled. When you do choke and lose badly don’t get up set about it. Just study why and how it occurred and try to learn from that mistake and not allow it to happen again. Type B people do better with this than anxious nervous type A’s. So when you play pool, hang loose dude. Stay cool and don’t let any thing or any one upset or affect you. Just whistle while you work and run out on the other guy. If you don’t miss then there is no way the other guy can win.

You must develop a pure perfect stroke you can trust and that will take a coach and a advanced level teacher. FL say’s only the good die young, God allows all pool hustlers to live till they are 85 so they can suffer. If I knew I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of my self. I had a **** good run and more time here than I expected or planned for so if it all ends tomorrow, no tears, I lived 3 life times in the same span a normal man lives one. When I die I want to be cremated and my ashes sprinkled inside a Super Wal-Mart, then I’ll know my kids will finally come to see me twice a week. Actually my ashes will be sprinkled off the far point of lovers Key in Bonita Springs, Florida.
There was always only three things important to me. Panther Piss, ***** and Pool, the big 3. Get those 3 right and then as Lamata said, the rest of it don’t matta no how. You run into jerks in pool halls you want to kill. Trying to keep from doing that is not easy. When they get to me now, I just take off. Not letting them upset me means I will probably live longer.

That is the reason I quit playing pool in bars in Texas. There are a lot of people not walking this earth because of a quarter on a pool table. So I got where I only played with people I knew and never a stranger. Now I just quit going to bars at all.

Never play people strange to you unless its for a beer or a buck, something really low steaks. The minute they begin to show anger or hostility, buy them a drink and leave.

Most fellows play sets with their pals for 20 and the money just flows back and forth and at the end of the year most are about even.

We have had a lot of fights just over whose quarter is up for the next game. So the easiest way for me to deal with it now is just not go there. In my younger years I dealt with it. Today I don't heal quite as quickly as I once did.
