AIMING SEEING THE SHOT IN TWO PARTS
2-17-09, CR, Fast Larry Guninger, all rights reserved, 3 pages, published in numerous internet sites.
The beginner only can see the pot of the ball. All of his focus is just making the shot. He pays no attention at all where the cue ball is going, nor does he really have any control over it. His runs are limited to knocking off easy ducks and in 8 ball the run usually ends after 3 to 5 balls. These are APA 3’s and 4’s.
When he enters into the intermediate 2nd stage of play he now knows he must pot and play shape on the next ball. He is usually only thinking at best one ball ahead. He gets on the next ball a lot but usually fails to have the proper angle to get to the next ball after that. This is a lower level weak APA 5.
In the advanced stage, an APA 6, he is now planning 3 balls ahead and trying to play shape to go from ball to ball.
In the expert mode, an APA 7, he is planning to run out the entire rack, an 8 ball out if he broke and spread them properly.
How we play and how we plan our run outs goes through 4 stages of learning. The beginner would only confuse and frustrate himself planning ahead 8 balls. But I think when players are potting well and are in the 5 level they should then jump over one of these phases and begin thinking and planning like the expert does. The faster you learn how to do that, the faster your advancement becomes.
Your problem is: You spent years learning to put all of your emphasis on seeing and making the pot. That is what you have grooved and programmed. Only recently have you learned how to try and play shape. You potting skills are a lot better than your position skills. It is now time for you to see and realize both skills must be equal. You now only see one half of the shot, and you hope the CB, cue ball goes somewhere over there to give you another shot.
You must stop this mode of thinking now and see every shot in two parts. The pot, the shape. You must see them as one, feel them as one, visualize them as one…
You must plan the rack after the break. It’s a bad break, so you plan a 3 or 4 ball run to play and duck into a safe leaving no shot. You do not go too deep into the rack leaving balls to hide behind. Your cardinal rule now you have tattooed inside your eyelids is: If you can’t run 8, you never run 7. You pull up short and duck and hide.
If it’s a run out table then you go for it. Any good solid Apa 5 can run out a perfect open table now and then. The more you practice it, the better you get at it once you begin to succeed at it and your mind accepts it’s possible for you to do it.
You plan how you are going to run all 8 balls and pick the proper path to each one after the break. I spend a lot of time doing this. I do not rush into the rack without this careful study taking place.
Here is an example of a solid run out table. A pro will get out here 86 to 92% of the time. I choose stripes. The beginner always begins with the duck or easiest shot, the 11 ball. That thinking has to go. If you miss, let it be early when there are a lot of balls on the table to save you. I always look for a ball close to the 8 so I can pot it last and just stick and have a simple final shot on the 8. So I know first off the 11 will be my last stripe I will shoot. I want to go up table if I can and clean out all the balls there, then come back down table and finish off what is left. I am then no longer playing on a 4 x 9, I am playing on a 4x4’ table and all my shots are short. I stop running up and down the table and leaving long shots.
http://CueTable.com/P/?@4AJkV1BQcc1CGJK3DE...NaJc2OYMQ4PEII@
The run, pot 10 in the corner, create an angle under the 12 to pot it in the other corner and using a draw stun slide the CB up table into a 3 ball choice of shots. No way can I go badly here. If I come up short I shoot the 13 in the side and if I blow that my bailout is the longer 15 in the down table left corner. If I get straight on the 9 which is my primary plan I shoot it, roll forward just a little to create an angle off of the 13, to create another wider angle on the 15 in the corner to then using some draw coming up and back across table to create a small angle on the 14 to get straight on the 11 where I stick stick, 11 pot black. If I run into the 7 coming across I will change the plan to 11-14-8 and out. I am constantly thinking and planning angle to angle. When I create these golden angles, it becomes easy to get on the next shot with little effort.

http://CueTable.com/P/?@4AJkV1BQcc1CGJK3DE...lJon3mKme3mAsL@
Do not try and create perfect shape if it is not there. Learn how to do as little as possible with the CB as you can and let your angles do the work for you. Planning ahead means never scratching in the side pocket on this 3 ball out, or leaving a long stretch shot you can miss cue on or flub.
http://CueTable.com/P/?@2GRkN1HaCh2IFLp2PB...kQNI2kbQa1kUrD@
I take out the scratch by going above the side pocket, and now leaving a longer shot, but one I do not have to stretch on and I can make a comfortable bridge and stroke. By coming up short of the long rail, I eliminate any chance of the side scratch and I also create a small angle off the 8 so I don’t leave the CB on the rail leaving a hard shot on the 9. I just bounce off the 8 and I am straight in on the 9. It’s all done by planning ahead to exact places you will leave your cue ball at.
http://CueTable.com/P/?@2GRkN1Hajf2IFLp2PB...lMuM1lMVL1lKiS@
I want you to see each shot, as totally separate from the last one, or the next one. We now spend twice the time with our eyes on the OB object ball with tight focus on the aim point on the ball just before we shoot. I want you to double or triple the time you are spending in Port arms standing over the shot before you plant to shoot. I now want you to see both parts of the shot as one. I want you to pick an aim point on the OB, an exact aim point going into the pocket, and now the most important one of all, an exact spot, the size of a dime, where your CB stops creating the next angle to angle. You see the perfect pot, you see the perfect roll of the CB right on that exact dime spot, you now plant, and the shot should be off in 2 to 3 seconds. All of your aiming is now done standing upright, very little is now done, once you are on the cloth. When you complete both, perfect pot and shape, you do not run to the next shot, you walk the angles, seeing the next desired angle, and upright you repeat the same aim plan session, then plant in total focus and perform again perfectly. You keep doing that until you run out of balls to shoot.
In practice if you do not pot perfect, you keep shooting it until you do. If you pot and do not hit perfect shape, you keep shooting until you do both perfect. You now learn to practice perfect shots and that shot now has two equal parts to it.

http://cuetable.com/P/index.html Note, you may have to download shockwave.
Wei table diagram. To open and see a shot when there is a line of Html code like this:
http://CueTable.com/P/?@1EAKq1PALH4QPBE2Rd...kALH4kQfn1uCtP@
Place your mouse on the line and hold down Ctrl button and shift on your left bottom of your key board and hit left click on your mouse fast twice, give it a few seconds to load and the shot and table diagram will appear. Depending on the speed and condition of your computer, this may take 20 seconds, so wait for it to come up.
To learn how to draw such shots takes some practice and the site will teach you now it works.
http://cuetable.com/mission.html
Begin by hitting the main on the left side which will show you examples of how it works. You can then open a table on the right side and begin to draw. If you have any problems in knowing how to export your shot to our site then email me at Flepool@bellsouth.net
When the table is first displayed all your controls will be on the bottom long rail. On the far left see an X and a ? Click the X, the rail fills up with options. I now drag and drop my Cb and Ob, then click and drag lines to display where they go. To the right of the ? I click the cue ball, then I drag the blue mark from the center and leave it on the ball where I want to show what English I am using. To the right of the side pocket I click the pool cue and it displays. To the right of this you see 3 little red boxes, go to the far one on the right, the 3rd one, and click it, then go to your post and the html code should then drop and display. To the right of this is a X, so if you mess up, you click the x and the table clears and you can start over. There are many more things you can do by studying the site but these are the main controls I use.

Pool is being taught wrong by almost everyone but me and a small group who actually know. Very few actually do know and have the knowledge to take you there. Most of what you know and paid for is dead wrong which is why you are reading this now, it did not work for you. You thought it was you. It never dawned on you. You had a bad teacher that did not know. If you want the truth and methods that do work come see me.

All truth passes through three stages. First it is ridiculed. Second it is violently opposed. Third it is accepted as being self-evident. - Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860)
Do not reprove the fool lest he hate you. Reprove the wise man and he will love you. Proverbs 9:8.
Those who seek me seek inside knowledge and receive it from a high end finisher and Grand Master level instructor who can actually play. Those who seek it from big names writing books receive bull crap from a guy who can’t run 3 friggen balls and they get what they paid for. Big time Bull crap that does not work which leads them into paralysis by analysis. They live on the premise that a sucker like you is born every minute and you will keep buying their crap. Come to me, I’ll give you the straight story on every facet of the game.

Power in pool does not come from muscles. It comes from the know how to produce a shot. Most power shots are from advanced knowledge and using acquired special techniques, or secrets to these shots which can be learned by almost any one in time with practice and determination.

Therefore: Knowledge is Power….

Originally quoted by Sir Francis Bacon in Meditationes Sacrae (1597).

Seek out an advanced level teacher, who has this advanced knowledge. Never waste your time or money on beginner teachers. Become a student of the game.
The more knowledge a player possesses, the more power he acquires. The more shots he knows, the more chances he has to get out on you. The more he knows, the more confident he becomes. The more confident he becomes turns him into a champion and a winner.
A beginner in pool is like a golfer playing 18 holes with just one club. I can easily defeat Tiger Woods with my 14 clubs if I make him play with just 1 club. I have many options and shots, he only has a few. When I graduate a student, he has 30 clubs. His quiver is full of many arrows to shoot. There is no shot he does not know about and cannot produce.
The better players are defeating you because they simply know more than you and have greater experience. You are in the 3rd grade, the best players beating you just graduated from College and are about to begin their MBA’s. You can cut this distance down between you two fast with a good coach, study, practice and hard work. It won’t happen by you just beating balls around. It will only happen if you acquire knowledge by expanding your repertoire of shots.
May God bless and peace be with you. May there now be peace between us. If you are a real pool player, then fast truly loves you. May the wind be always on your back and all 9 balls fall.
VENI VIDI VICI, OMNIA VINCIT AMOR. “ Latin for “I came, I saw, I conquered, love conquerors all. Yes I really did do it all and you can believe it, or not. If you don’t believe it, C’est La Vie. " Shoot straight, innovate, never give up, just run out on the other guy then there is no way for you to lose.
Either lead me, follow me or get the hell out of my way. Do one of the three please. Come celebrate the wonder of this beautiful game with me and become a student of it.
Be my friend, walk my way, flow with what I teach you and you will soar like the Eagle into levels of excellence you never dreamed possible. Play by feel, not by systems, do not make a simple game complicated. Go with what you know, go with what is natural.
"Winners make things happen. Losers let things happen." In the words of Vince Lombardi, "When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened." Vince said you’ve got to pay the price. Winning is not a sometime thing, it’s an all the time thing. Winning is a habit, unfortunately so is losing.
Vince Lombardi once said, “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of profession or endeavor. FL says: You can choose to be a ball banger, or a student of the game. You can go through life with a high run of 5, or learn how to run racks. The choice is yours, but to become a winner, a champion, you must pay a price for that success. It does not come free.
You must become a happy person. Champions are happy, losers are sad people. You cannot achieve happiness without love. Worldly feelings lead to ties and passions. For everything we acquire there is a price to pay. For every attachment there are freedoms to give up.

You must learn the difference between animal passion and true love. In the end, you lose whatever you love. It is all fleeting. You cannot hang on to anything for long. Everything around you is constantly changing. That is why you experience pain, there is loss. If you do not wish pain of the heart then do not seek love or attachments. The longer you live, the more you lose. To love, means to suffer pain. For some who are lucky in love, they experience more love than pain. Others are not so lucky.

The only other option is to reject worldly possessions, passions, all family ties and live as a monk or priest and seek purity and enlightenment. There can be love in that quest.

Those are the only two paths to happiness. The third one is to become a predator who only takes, who gives no love, and only leaves sorrow in his path. That is the path to hell. When your judgment day comes and your book is read, it is empty of love and that condemns your soul. To free yourself of life's passions and possessions is where total freedom lies. It then puts you on the path of enlightenment which the only way to pure peace in your heart.

An ignorant person is one who doesn't know what you have just found out.

How do you get to Carneigh hall? Practice practice practice...
"Practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect"
You must practice with a plan and practice to hit perfect shots. Anything less than perfect is then no longer acceptable.

There are only two types of players. Winners, and losers. As most are losers, that is why it is so easy for the winner to dominate them. If you want to be a winner, you first must learn now to think like one and stop thinking like a loser.

"A single conversation across the table with a wise teacher is worth a month's study of books" - Chinese Proverb
This is a feel game and a mind game. When the mind is pure, pure perfect pool will follow. Perfect pool comes from being taught how to practice perfect. Being in dead punch is the ultimate trip and reward from that. “FL”

God gave us 12 year old Scotch, and a hard Willie with a mission, which IMHO, is total proof he loves us and wishes us to have a good time.

If you can dream it, see it, believe it, you can be it and perform totally out of the box. Then you are a person with no limits who can achieve anything he can imagine that a human body is capable of producing. “FL”

May you be in heaven an hour before the devil knows you’re dead. In time, it’s all dust in the wind anyway. Don’t take yourself, or anything too serious, just be happy and healthy. Laughter, good whiskey and song is the best medicine. If you have a library, a garden, a good woman and a barrel of Scotch, 4 to 6 good dogs, you have all you need. Be sure to take the time, to smell the flowers along the way.
Aristole said “ Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” People will forget what you did, what you wrote, what you accomplished. People are like Elephants, they will never forget you if you are rude or cruel to them, also, they will never forget you if you are kind and loving towards them. Each person you meet, give them a warm smile and show them the love you have for everyone no matter what their status or position in life is, treat them all the same. Tomorrow is not guaranteed to any of us. So live this day, like it is your last one, who knows, it just might be.

Die happy and you lived a good life. God bless American, the land of the free and of the brave.

Have you read "The 8-Ball Bible" by R. Givens? It's about bar-table 8-ball. I'm enjoying it. He promotes the concept of "shot-safes", shots where if you miss them you leave yourself safe. He also advises against using the side pockets on bar tables because they are smaller.

I'm on an APA team and cannot convince my teammates to stop potting every ball they can. It's like they are hypnotized by pottable balls.

I wonder if you can't run out, but you can sink a couple of your own balls that are more or less neutral: they are not "saver" balls, they don't particularly block your opponent, and they are not problem balls, is it better to leave them on the table? Or would it be better to get them out of the way for a later run?

No I have not read his book, but I teach to think of a table as having 4 pockets and shoot into the corners. You shoot into the sides when the pocket is full and you are towards the center of the table, but get a diamond or two down table, and your better going further down to a corner, than to the closer side, because the corner gives a bigger pocket. I measure the pockets before I play on a table and if the sides are 5 l/2" I use them a lot, if they are 5", less, I have seen some that were 4 l/2", so you have to know. As Bert said and I quote, youse guys gotta stop shootin in does side pockets. Youse keep shootin in does, and youse is gonna be a regular dinner in the McDonalds dumpster.

FL continues, most of you shoot at the black of the side and hit the low point coming in. You have to learn how to sight not into the pocket black, but into the facing of the high point which is green. You miss these so much because of your aim point.

Shooting so if you miss you leave no shot, that I am totally opposed to. That is putting a negative in your mind, saying you can, you might miss. That is how a loser thinks. I see only the shot making and there is no thought of missing. That is how a winner thinks.
