Pelican has a pretty impressive cue collection. Fast Larry probably has more than a few cues in his collection that are pretty valuable. There's another topic with a real Balabuskka for sale on Ebay for $21K and change. So, my question is....

How much would you be willing to pay for a cue? The most I've ever paid is $1600. I'd be willing to go up to $4000 - anything over that would require my wife's permission :)

So, how much?

Yours Truly,
The Woim

I am but a poor, humble site admin playing with a set of Players cues. Both of them together cost me less than 300.00. If I had the money to spre I'd probably spend about 400-500.00 on a cue. Truthfully, I play fine with my set of Players cues. They are after all, the economy line from Lucasi cues.

I have never paid more than 200 for a cue. I have had mcdermotts, 30 dollar sneakies, a tiger shaft, A predator 5k2 with a 314 2nd gen shaft (which is the most expensive of them all).

I actually got it 50 percent off from my boss and did some manual labor for him and all i had to spend was 200.

Good God I'm cheap

The most expensive of mine are the Koa Black, the anniversary Black, and the Spain at 3K each. If I ever hear from Hercek the cue I want him to build may run five figures. Now, you have got to keep in mind, these are not playing cues. This is my version of a 401k. I have no CDs, stocks, other retirement, etc., just social security when I hit 66. If I get too feeble to work I'll start selling them off. In the meantime I can enjoy owning them. I have never sat down and figured what I have in the whole lot. Hum, something to do on a rainy afternoon.

Later, Pel

The most I would pay...is the most I could hide from the Mrs. :)

She keeps the budget tighter than a hawks butt in a power dive

Hmm... I don't think I can ever see myself paying anything more than $1,000 for a cue. I currently use a Viking that was under $200.

At the moment I probably wouldn't spend over 400 for a cue with me being a college student and all. If my income would permit I'd probably get a pretty expensive cue hoping it would go up in value.

The great thing is I work at a pool hall. I got my predator for cheap, plus I can get a custom cue for hopefully under 200.

It is not so much the 3k or 4k that creates me the problem it is the money it would cost me for the divorce when Mamma found out would be my problem. I did tell her I ordered one of FL cues but I have some how forgot to tell her how much I paid for it. This by the way is the most I have ever paid for a cue.

Guys,

A good way to have peace in the home is to start a separate bank account and deposit $25-$100 or more a month. The separate bank account would be discrete (The Woim is sounding repetitive) from the checking account and any other account used to pay the bills.

After six months or so, you've got anywhere from $150 - $600 or more. This could be a down payment for a big name customer builder or you could buy a nice cue with the money outright.

Of course, there are other ways also but the wife won't be too angry if your cue purchase doesn't jeopardize anything.

Yours Truly,
The Woim

Yes I just saw an original 60's Balabushka sell on ebay for about $4200.00 It made me sick that I couldn't get it. I have been shooting with my GB-4 FOR 19 YEARS NOW AND WOULDN'T TAKE ANY CUE FOR IT.... except an original of course....

I'd spend 500 at most, which is what im playing with now Just dont see myself dishing out grands for a cue. I got more things to worry about like gas money. Basically with any cue over 500 your paying for nice craftsmanship and a sweet design. However I think that pool players just want a cue that will help their game and looks are secondary. Me I want a good cue and a good shaft for a good price. Anything more than that is icing on the cake.

I don't think I'd ever go over $1000 on a cue. I can see spending that much for a great working tool but not for a pretty cue that isn't a great player. I can't see myself buying anything but a full splice cue anymore.

I'm not sentimental or a big "collector" of anything. Every piece of sporting equipment I have is usable and gets used. I appreciate excellent workmanship and I like beautiful cues but I can't see waiting 5 years for any cue. Life's too short not to enjoy it. I'd spend real money to get a great cue but I wouldn't pay a lot extra for fancy doodads.

I like bargains. Today a Balabushka GB-7 sold on eBay for $284. That was a steal, because it's a great cue which sold for $640 street price, $800 list, before it was discontinued. If my cash wasn't flowing toward a pool table I'd have bid on it.

I got a fine, unused Viking VM-24 for $100 at a pawn shop, about 1/3 what it sold for 6 years ago. My main playing cue is a very nice Joss AJ-4 that I got used when it was 3 months old, for $250 with two shafts, one a Black Dot, Moori tips, about a $450 package when new. Both are solid, reliable American production cues. The most I've spent (so far) on a cue is $400 and that was a bargain, too. I prefer to buy American when I can and don't buy from a repressive or communist country like China if I can help it. That's my personal choice, not necessarily anything to do with their manufacturing ability.

You will be happy to know, that your bushka is not made by commies, but by Japanese, ah so.

I originally posted that the most I'd be willing to pay is $4000. Well, I better revise that... I think $1800 is the most I'd be willing to pay.

Just last Friday I picked up a new custom cue made by Mike Zimmerman of O'Fallon, IL - I'll post pics in a couple days. The cue has four points with veneers, a purpleheart buttsleeve and an artificial ivory buttcap. The joint is artificial ivory and it comes with two shafts - bought the whole thing for approx. $650.

I worked over the design with Mike many months back. I wanted a cue that looked somewhat like the Herman Rambow cues that Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason played with in "The Hustler".

The cue plays really great, it is slightly lively with a moderate stiff shaft. It's a player cue for me and I'm not overly worried about dinging it. So I can relax and focus on how lame my game has become.

Yours truly,
The Woim

I spoke with Richard Black recently. Next year is when he is due to produce a 35th anniversary cue but he is not sure if he will do it or not. He did say that if he does he will probaly limit it to 10 pieces instead of 35. Now, Mrs Black always gets #1 so that means there will only be 9 available. I told him, if possible would like to get number 8 to match my 30th anniv. He said that if he only makes 10 they will be quite expensive. So, I guess what I am getting at is that if he does produce a 35th anniv the most I would be willing to pay for a cue is probably going way up.

Pel,

Two questions regarding Mr. Black. 1. How long is the wait? 2. What is the normal asking price?
