PRO, A, B, C WHAT AM I!
Why do we allow other people to grade us, is it our own insecurities and need to belong and feel comfortable with our status or social standing in the pool room. If I am a C player can I not talk to a pro, and if when we walk out the door to the pool room, if I am a doctor can the pool pro not talk to me, yet we allow leagues and tournaments to give us classifications that I believe can hold us back stifling us from becoming the players we could be. There is an old story about a pool hustler named Don Willis that I love and it illustrates my point perfectly, a reporter doing a news story at a championship tournament was interviewing players, and they mentioned that Don was one of the best ever. As the reporter was having these champions list their titles and championships he decided to ask Don to list his also. Don took the stack of papers from the reporter and went through them writing I beat him on the top of the sheets. Don didn’t worry about championships and rankings he only concerned himself with who he could beat and who could beat him (not many) and so should we.
How do you know if you could beat a B player if you never play one because you are ranked a C player. Pool players do not improve by only playing players they can beat they improve by challenging themselves and others. The pro’s did not become pro’s by only playing people they could beat they played anyone who wanted to play and that is how the got better.
DON’T LET ANYONE RANK YOU, RANK YOURSELF, I CAN BEAT HIM OR HE CAN BEAT ME (BUT NOT FOR LONG!).
Do not become comfortable with a ranking someone else has given you. Settling for this dooms you to stay there forever, instead view it as their opinion of your capabilities, everyone is allowed their opinion but not all of them are right and you can prove them wrong.
