First post here.
I shoot on both a Tuesday and a Thursday night sanctioned league in Michigan and have for years. I generally uses a Lucasi and have swapped a few evenings with my Meucci HOF-1 (original shaft), and shot well regardless.
Well the past few weeks I've been "in the zone" using both cues and shot an hour with friends McDermott yesterday and was making multiple shots that were of "much higher" difficulty. I never cared for the Linen Wraps and smaller shafts that my friend only plays with. However I simply couldn't miss my shots and I was playing with a cue I didn't care for.
Well my point is I'm finding out that obviously having a cue (or two) that you feel confident with is the key, but when you're "in the zone" you very well could play with some Walmart fiberglass $29 POS if you're stroking the balls well, sticking to your fundamentals and PLAY VERY VERY WELL!
Im sure Fast has plenty of stories about using some warped bar cues or a whittled down table leg and running tables of folks?
And being "in the zone" is a lot more fun than when you're "out of the zone"!

Does a cue matter when you're in "the zone"?

I have this theory that I have to get used to certain equipment I'm playing on before I play well. Once I got used to my mcdermott I was shooting fairly decently, but now I have a predator and the mcdermott is now my car cue. I recently acquired the predator last week and am still getting used to the simonis house cloth as well as the tight pockets and aramith balls.
Whether or not you're in the zone, I usually have to be playing for a little while with any cue before my stroke is grooved and I'm playing well.

When you are riding it
home, can see the finish line, don't spit da bit, begin beating the ass
with your riding whip and yell out like Tarzan, who's yo daddy. When
she screams FL, don't take it too hard, life goes on.

The short answer is NO.
When you're hitting it in the zone, the cue doesn't matter. Of course, having a cue you're comfortable will increase your likelihood of entering the zone.

Zone or no zone you need a good cue. Many shots are just not possible with a normal house cue. Or a cheapo. Try a 4 foot long shot to the far corner with a 16 foot top spin leave to get all the way back.. Try it with a predator . then try it with a house cue. House cue you need to hit it break speed and pray it does the 16 foot follow.. the predator does it with a smooth sure stroke.
Spin shots are another example. Try a long rail spin shot taking the object ball down the rail from 80%
Not going to happen with a cheapo cue. the tip isnt up to par
