Rules and how to play are two entirely different things. I would seek out someone who plays them and they'll help you out.

Learn the rules to any game before you start to play. No point in learning something twice.
How to play: Find a mentor, someone who is willing to beat the snot out of you and who is willing to share how he is beating you. Keep with drills, there is no substitute for pocketing a LOT of balls.

Yeah, in straight pool making balls is big-time. Basically, using all 15 balls, you call a pocket and pot a ball. That is one point; shoot again... At the last ball, the other 14 balls come up and are racked, so that you can shoot the last ball of the previous rack for a break out on the new rack. This allows you to run a virtually unlimited amount of balls on your opponent.
For one-pocket, patience is key. You have to think ahead as in Chess, and give yourself opportunities to pocket balls.
I absolutely LOVE watching some strong players playing one-pocket, it is amazing.
Generally, you play safes repeatedly while pushing balls towards your pocket and knocking balls away from your opponent's pocket.

I like onehole. It is more of a thinkers game. I am in the early stages of old age and can't shoot heads up with the younger guys in 9 ball but I can still think and usually out think 'em. :-D
