About 60 seconds and you know if you tip is good or not, hit some hard draws and follows, then you will know.

I agree totally it doesn't take long to decide / find out if a tip / cue hits well or not!

A tip can go bad inside where it's hard to see. Sometimes you can pick at the edges with your finger nail and raise it up where it has seperated. When it begins to play funny, dead, or has some werid sound and a couple of sanding downs dont help, I dont take the chance and its out of here in a flash. You have to be very careful with lepros, they are notorious for going bad and looking great.

Just don't use a tip tool on a layered tip! A one piece tip won't really be hurt by it, but a tip tool will eventually break the lamination of the tip layers.

Hi friend,
Yes it is fine that you should smooth you cue stick tip
before you play but try to less concentrate on these things. As you being the good player you should only concentrate on play. You can take 15-20 min.before play. Not more than that. You can take help from tools ,and try to make the tip in a dime shape with a degree of roughness for chalk to hold fairly well
Before i usually waste time on these things then I came to understand what is more important then i go through some links like http://www.poolalley...ay_online_pool/
Then i practice to play online pools now i am improving in play.

A tip pick tool will up it up to hold chalk if it mis glazed and does not remove material.
