Does english and beginners mix
Should a beginner only use center ball and just learn how to pot balls, or should he begin to learn and use english and how to play shape in the beginning? If he uses English, now much, your opinion please? :-)

IMO, a brand new beginner should be learning to use centerball to learn where the true center of the ball is and that way they can also tell if their stroke is true and if their PIP (personal eye pattern) is working.
Just now starting to feel my 'wheaties', meaning shooting decent etc, still dont use much. Other than a few special shots, I think the angle line and speed can get you most places.
English has its place, but is a blessing and a curse imo. There is so much neat stuff you can do with it,but it can mess up the shot worse if you dont know how much english to use. I have actually seen some become so used to putting english on every shot, they can hardly hit the center of the ball anymore. :-o :-o

On thing I have seen in league that bothered me. I have seen these coachings where they are advising sl2s (newby) on exactly where to place the tip on the cue which involves english in many cases. They do know understand why they are hitting the ball this way, just putting the cue where there coach said to.
Then I have seen these same sl2s using english and missing, then turning to me with surprise saying 'I thought english was a good thing'. I hate to see coaches give a player a shot that is significantly above their skill and they cannot possibly learn from it at that time.
That would be like telling a sl3 or sl4 even how to go 3 rails for position, when they are just learning to be decent at draw, top and one to two rails at best for position.
I guess I think that folks should be instructed at a level consistent with what they are doing at the table. Sometimes I think coachings do more harm than good, especially when beginners are taught english and it would never have occurred to them otherwise. Then they start using something they dont understand and screw up their opportunity to get good at centerball.

I teach beginners English, then teach them to use it as little as possible.

When I was young and playing snooker with my daddy as long a she was there to tell me what english to put on the ball I did good. He really did not teach me he just told me what ball to shot and what english to put on the cue ball to keep from scratching. Since I was real small and playing at his partner the way I could save him points was not scratching. I learned a lot later on but then I was just shooting as instructed.

A beginning player should use center high, center center, and center low - that is all.
A really good player can move around the table just fine doing the same.
