I read in an article created from a local poolhall here by my house. The pool hall is owned by DON Steele. Don steele has played in pro events for nearly 30 years now. Anyway , It was about how poolhalls are dieing off. Back in the day people had very little means of transportation, wich meant they stayed around thier towns and usually ended up at the bar playing pool, or the local pool hall. Now in this day and age pool halls are far and few. Most of the pool halls you see are empty or they are filled with the owners friends talking about sports, and you'll have the occasional question asked, you wanna play a game.
Even 8 years ago i quit my minimum wage job and started shooting pool for a living. I would play in 8 local tournaments a week and league twice a week. I have not seen a local poolhall or bar put on a tournament in years ..... And if they do, haf the people withdraw from the tourney as soon as i walk in.
IF there are any pool tourneys within 50 miles of pittsburgh PA, let me know. I am always up for traveling for a weekend of pool, if the payout is good ;-)
My next pool trip is in march. I will be playing in Columbus Ohio in the APA's regional singles qualifier for the 8 ball classic . I'm wondering if any of you guys will be there !

Weirton, WV has a poolhall called Turnpike Tommy's, it's about 45 minutes away (in fact, I'm leaving work in 5 minutes to go to a small 9-ball tourney. If you want to play sometime, let me know.)
Friday - $13 entry fee, anywhere from 12-25 people, race to your handicap. Starts at 6, show up a few hours early so you can get rated.
Saturday - $3 youth 9-ball tourney
Sunday - ABCD handicap 8-ball tourney, $8? to get in
Monday - ABCD 9-ball, not too many people show up. $8 to get in I think.
The guys are pretty decent.
Also, Lucky's in Wellsburgh, PA has an 8-ball tournament on Saturday nights at 7. There's one in Morristown, OH, too.. but that would be about an hour and a half drive.
Wheeling, WV has one on Friday I believe, but I'm not sure where or what time.
If you want a ride down to Lucky's if I go on Saturday, we can meet in Weirton and I'll take you down.
Edit: The payouts aren't great, but I hear the one in Morristown is ~$300+ in the winter.

Breakers is the place, nice layout, multiple tournaments per week, and tons of action.
The South Hills Golden Cue has a single elimination handicapped tournament on Saturday nights. $15 entry, starts at 1AM (actually Sun. morning), and is on 9' Brunswicks. This tournament used to be pretty solid (filling a 32 person bracket) back when Mike Hornik (sp?) ran it, but it's been loosing players ever since. I haven't been there in a while, so this Saturday I'll check it out.

The South Hills Golden Cue in Bridgeville, PA had an 8 person tournament last Saturday...
Breakers has 1/2 ratings handicapped tournaments on Wed., Fri., and Sun. There is also one on Mon., but it is for 3-5's only, and they will not let you in unless you play in at least one of the other ones first. I beleive practice is for about an hour and usually gets underway around 6:30pm, during the week, and it's one hour different on Sunday-but of course, I forget if it is earlier or later!

Yesterday, Breakers only had four people show up and they did not hold a tournament. (8 min.). They said that recently Wednesdays were "iffy", but Fridays usually turn out well...
Once again, I'll let you know when I get the scoop. I've got a cold, so I probably won't go up on Friday this week.

The South Hills Golden Cue in Bridgeville, PA had 14 people in their tournament this past week. That's a little better than the week before... The payout was $90, $45, $15, $15.
Breakers rates all new players at 7; so make sure you can run some balls before you go there. Also, they do a poor job of welcoming new players; it's a tough crowd.
