best forum ever... and i'm in more than 3

***************************************
Many of you feel this way and we have tried to put up a board where you get a straight honest answer to your questions. There are no clicks here which beat up on and trash newbies. Rarely do we have a flame war and that get's put out early. This is simply an upscale board for upscale people.

Two things you can do to help us.

(1) Email and tell your friends and pals about us, spread the word. Get them in and posting with you. Write down www.poolchat.net and give it to each of your league team members. It will help them become better players.

(2) Start more threads and topics and then discuss them. There is too much reading and mining here and not enough participation. We need less lurking and more posting.

We thank you for your loyal support and being a part of the poolchat family and experience.

Also I need to log in each time I want to post something. On the other forums, I stay logged in forever.

(Each time I turn on my computer and connect, I get a different IP address...)

That is an excellent point, so I just minimize and park it down on the task bar so if I come back in hours later I am still in. Maybe the web dude can fix this.

reason why there's a lot of lurking than posting is because they questions they wanna asked are already answered

That was the conclusion we came to and is why we are considering firing fast larry. Guido is standing by waiting for the order.

I get randomly logged out without even closing the window. So I would say thats the biggest problem with the site. There have been numerous posts that I have written and then when I clicked post it said that i must then log in. I would then have to rewrite everything so I just gave up and didn't respond. It has since gotten a great deal better.

Make your post in word, then run spell check, then copy and drop it on pool chat, then nothing can be lost and you make better posts. Don't try to do a post until you confirm you are logged in by seeing your name at the top.

You don't know him like we do ;-)

Kidding, anyway... I changed the login system from cookies to sessions. It may break stuff, or it may make things much better. Let me know if you have problems at poolchattech@gmail.com.

Hey Guys.

One thing that always struck me about this place was that in each thread you have a 'post new thread' button at the top and bottom of the page, but to post a message in the thread you're viewing you have to use the reply button on an earlier message.

There's no 'reply' or 'post in this thread' button at the bottom, independent of the individual messages.

You may do that intentionally, so that there's no absent-minded confusion between the 'reply' and 'new thread' buttons (which could be easily done).

But I still sometimes find myself looking around for a reply button.

Also, the non-pool forum looks a little lonely at the bottom there.

Obviously the main reason we're here is to talk pool, but we are a community too, with other interests to chat about.

Perhaps if the non-pool forum was given a little bit more prominence of its own, it might get more use, and open up some more interaction and deepen the community nature of the site.

I agree about the Reply button. It'll take a bit of hacking to figure out where the code to do that is, though.

To you guys who are getting logged out, are you using Firefox? I'd suggest getting it. It should relieve a lot of your troubles :)

The reply button has been my top pet peeve all along but so far none of us has figured out how to fix it. It came with the system and changing it may be not possible.

My mommy always said I could do anything!

I'm see what I can do today. :hammer:

Edit: Sorry if I break the forums for a couple minutes. Just a warning.

Edit2: You guys have no idea how cryptic some of this code is. Fun stuff.

Edit3: Actually... I'm not sure this can be done easily. The reply script won't work without having a postID... and there's no default postID. To fix this, I'd have to rewrite most of the script. While I could do this, I think I'm going to look into switching the software we run on. E-Xoops isn't even being developed anymore.

Just installing a new forum backend isn't difficult. Moving almost 10,000 posts, and about 2,000 topics in about 8 different forums is the tricky part.

Keep the ideas coming, guys. It will ultimately be your needs that decide which package we move to.

That sounds like the best thing for the long run. I tried finding documentation for this boards software and did not find much of anything! So I can see where it would be difficult to change anything...

Could the Reply button take a post ID from either the first or latest post in the forum?

It's outside my area of knowledge really, but I thought I'd offer the suggestion..

I'm afraid not. Good idea, though.
