When I put in a table how far off the wall should it be? I was thinking 5 feet?

Thanks

5 will work but 6 is better.

Pool Tables: Size Does Matter
When selecting a pool table for your home, there are two things you should consider. First, how large is the room you are planning to use as your new gameroom? You will need enough space around the pool table to play comfortably. If you really want to squeeze the pool table into a room that is smaller than what is ideal, you can sometimes get away with it by using a shorter cue in certain areas of the room. Below is a chart for the necessary room size based on the length of your cue and the size of the table.

7 Foot Pool Table Requirements
Cue Length Minimum Room Size
48" 11'3" x 14'6"
52" 11'11" x 15'2"

57" (Standard) 12'9" x 16'0"

8 Foot Pool Table Requirements
Cue Length Minimum Room Size
48" 11'8" x 15'4"
52" 12'4" x 16'0 "

57" (Standard) 13'2" x 16'10"

9 Foot Pool Table Requirements
Cue Length Minimum Room Size
48" 12'2" x 16'4"
52" 12'10" x 17'0 "

57" (Standard) 13'8" x 17'10"

If space isn't an issue an 8 foot table should be considered as standard. Most amateur tournaments utilize an 8 foot pool table. If you really take this game seriously and dream of a professional billiard career, a 9 foot pool table is the gold standard for you.

In addition, you may want to consider any other items you would like to have in your gameroom. A popular option these days is a 3 way gaming table for poker nights. These will require an additional 9' x 9' area for comfortable seating. Or, like my father-in-law, you might consider adding a bar to your gameroom. It really adds to the ambience when you can belly up to the bar.

For a very tight space, In Wall Cabinets manufactures a beautiful line of pool cue racks, billiard balls racks and cone chalk holders that fit flush with the wall in between studs. They are a beautiful solution for tight spaces, and add build-in elegance to any gameroom.
