Any who.. I've been wondering for a decent amount of time.. what is snooker? I know that its a form of billiards.. but.. whats the difference between it and a game of 8 or 9 ball? Whats the object of the game? Are there any differences between a snooker cue and a regular pool cue? Just the basics is all im looking for
-cheers

As i see it there are 2 main types of snooker - English and American.
I know the American game has a smaller table, bigger pockets and the balls are numbered (the colours anyway - not the reds) but otherwise know very little about American snooker
As for the English game - it's played on a 12X6 foot table with small pockets and fast cloth and cushions - the object of the game is to score more points than your openent to win each frame (like a rack in American games)
the balls are set up with 15 reds in a triangle and the player breaks from the "D" and tries not to smash up the rack like in 8 ball or 9 ball but to bring the white back up table and snooker the oponent behind a baulk colour
the object is to pot a red object ball then a coloured object ball, then another red etc and the balls have different point values:
Red: 1
Yellow: 2
Green: 3
Brown: 4
Blue: 5
Pink: 6
Black: 7
the green, brown and yellow are placed (in the order) on the spots on the D (near where the baulk line would be on a snooker table), the blue is in the spot at the centre of the table, the pink is touching the front ball of the 15 reds (in line with the blue and black) and the black is placed on the spot behind the reds
a foul is called for many things (the usual things in pool in general) but fouls are not called when no ball hits a cushion after behind hit and jumping the ball over any part of another ball is a foul
fouls are punished by a point penalty (added to your opponent's score) - fouls are generally 4 points to your oponent - say for potting the white or hitting the yellow when you need to hit a red but higher point penalties are given for fould involving the blue (5 points), pink (6 points) and black (7 points).
so - for example - if you are snookered and are required to hit a red - if you hit the green, it is your opponent's turn and he gets 4 points, but if you hit the pink, he gets his turn and 6 points
sorry if this is confusing as i doubt i've explained this very clearly as i'm not good at doing this in writing...and there are many other rules which i haven't mentioned here but this is the basis of the game
best thing to do i guess is look at a picture of how a snooker table is set up as i guess what i said won't help with that much, read some basic rules and then have a go at playing the game
